Content scheduling

Laboratory work schedule:

Objective

Purpose of the course:
This course provides you with the basic knowledge you need to design and construct foundations, trenches and retaining walls. You will also need the knowledge as a foundation for civil engineering.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding: you will be able to take a soil sample and examine it in the laboratory and be able to interpret the results.
Communication and teamwork: you will be able to communicate effectively geotechnical information, ideas and solutions within the engineering community.
Application of technology in practice: you will have the skills to perform geomechanical calculations.
Research and information retrieval: ability to work in a geotechnical laboratory/workshop environment.

Course objective:
After completing the course, you will be able to identify the types of mineral soil and be able to explain their use as building materials. You will be able to carry out laboratory tests on soil samples to determine the properties of soil materials, including hydraulic properties. In addition to the basic coursework described above, you will know the basics of soil crumbling, soil bearing capacity and the concept of earth pressure.

Content

1 credit: laboratory tests
1 credit: fundamentals of earth pressure, fundamentals of earth bearing capacity.
Identification of soil types, properties of soil types, hydraulic properties of soil, debris.

Student workload

One credit point means an average of 27 hours of work. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the way the course is implemented.
-------------------
In this study period, time use and workload is distributed as follows:
Total load: 80 h

Contact lectures: 28 h
Exercises and homework that support learning: 40 h
Laboratory work-, Exercise/project work to be done during the course: 10 h
Assessment of own competence/peer assessment: 2 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Avoidant (1): The student knows and recognizes the things described in the learning objectives of the course, and he can perform the basic competence tasks according to the objectives of the course: (Laboratory experiments, identifying soil types, and can tell about the characteristics of soil types, including hydraulic properties, basics of frost and bed surveys). The student can demonstrate his competence by listing things in accordance with the objectives.
Satisfactory (2): The student knows, recognizes and understands the basic skills described in the learning objectives of the study course. The student can demonstrate his competence by systematically describing the topics covered in the Study Course.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): The student has achieved the basic competence goals of the course and is able to demonstrate his competence clearly and comprehensibly. In addition, he is able to structure what he has learned perceptually and to apply what he has learned in practical tasks.
Commendable (4): The student has achieved the basic competence goals of the course and at least part of the advanced competence goals: (main principles of the bearing capacity of the earth and the concept of earth pressure). The student can describe the effects of different solutions and make reasoned choices between alternatives. Students can demonstrate their skills by completing tasks in accordance with the objectives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): The student has achieved the basic competence objectives of the course and almost all of the advanced competence objectives. Competence is demonstrated consistently and multidimensionally. The student is able to deal with the connections and differences of different perspectives and solutions in detail and critically. Students can demonstrate their skills by completing tasks in accordance with the objectives.
