Content scheduling

Contact classes are implemented according to a separate implementation-specific course plan, which is published in Moodle.

Objective

Knowledge of the basics of production technology provides a basis for making production engineering and production control solutions in companies engaged in production.

You will learn to outline the production-related activities of the future profession and to form an overall picture of production as part of the company's business. You will learn to understand how and by what methods production is designed, controlled and developed.

You will learn how to manage the principles of productivity, profitability and sustainable manufacturing. You will also learn the concepts of success factors in production operations such as cost efficiency, delivery capacity and flexibility.

After completing the course, you will be able to e.g. make simple cost calculations, design production controls, draw layout drawings, and outline systems for controlling items.

Knowledge and understanding:
You have the knowledge and understanding of production design, control and development methods suitable for the workshop.

Engineering practice:
You have the ability to identify and solve production problems by choosing appropriate, well-established, analytical and computational methods.
You can develop and design production processes and systems, which may include technical and economical constraints.

Content

Production network, production types, parts of the production system and production flow, production control and production design, cooperation in product development and production operations, maintenance.

Materials

Lecture material,
Lapinleimu, I., Kauppinen, V. ja Torvinen, S. Kone- ja metallituoteteollisuuden tuotantojärjestelmät. WSOY. 1997. ISBN 951-0-21436-1.

Teaching methods

Lectures an seminars introducing various aspects of production technology, as well as learning assignments based on information retrieval and application. Learning assignments are done and returned both individually and in groups.
In the middle of the course, free form anonymous feedback is collected for the development of the course.

The implementation of the course is based on classroom-based contact teaching. During the contact teaching sessions, approximately ten themes related to production technology are covered. The topics are explored using written lecture materials and demonstrative games illustrating production design. Throughout the course, students work on five learning tasks in groups, which are submitted both in written and oral seminar formats. The learning tasks are completed in groups of approximately four students. Each group has 2-3 seminar presentation slots during the course.

The responsible and transparent use of AI applications is encouraged in this course. Instructions for using artificial intelligence can be found in chapter 3.2 (https://help.jamk.fi/raportointiohje/fi/3-kirjoittamisprosessi/tekoalyn-kaytto-oppimistehtavissa-ja-opinnaytetyossa/) of the thesis reporting instructions. If necessary, the instructions for each learning assignment contain more detailed information on how to use it in that particular task.

If the student has not been present at the first contact class, and does not return the first learning task with the group within the deadline, he/she will be removed from the course, and after that he/she can no longer participate in this implementation of the course.

There is an 80% attendance requirement for contact classes in the course.

Employer connections

If possible, a representative of the manufacturing industry will give a visiting lecture during the study period.

Exam schedules

Exam on week number 17. The final exam is so-called near-term exam that is carried out in class. Two retake opportunities, which are organized in the exam studio.

International connections

This course is an introduction to industrial engineering studies. Some of the material is in English.

Completion alternatives

The assessment of previous competence is made on the first contact. It is possible to obtain exemptions, where applicable, on the basis of previous study.

Student workload

The calculated load of the course is 135 hours. It is divided between contact teaching, laboratory exercises and eight exercises:
lectures 56 h,
learning assignments 59 h,
independent work 20 h.
A total of 135 h of learning work.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The overall assessment consists of 50% of the exam and 50% of the learning assignments.
The examinations are organized three times in accordance with the degree rule.

Adequate (1): You will recognize the different functions and terminology of production, but you will only be able to adequately apply them in learning tasks.

Satisfactory (2): You understand what is meant by manufacturing flow, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturing flexibility. In addition, you will be able to describe the most common types of production, but you will only satisfactorily understand how production systems are designed and controlled.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You master the main things of the course, ie you are able to justify:
- to set up different production structures
- develop control systems for items
- to design layouts of production facilities
- make simple cost calculations.

Very good (4): You can create production structures, control items, design machine shop layouts, and make cost calculations. In addition, you will be able to apply what you have learned critically and innovatively in production design and development tasks. You will also be able to strongly justify the solutions and choices you make.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You can create production structures, control items, design machine shop layouts and make cost calculations. In addition, you will be able to apply what you have learned critically and innovatively in production design, control and development tasks. You will also be able to strongly justify the solutions and choices you make. You will be able to make syntheses and conclusions from the issues.

Qualifications

No special requirements. Motivation is the most important thing. Knowledge of manufacturing methods promotes study in the course, but is not necessary.

Further information

Continuous developmental feedback is given in the learning tasks.
Assessment consists of exam 50% and learning assignments 50%.
