Objective
Student masters different steps in material selection process. He can choose materials, when considering product's use, environment, production and other requirement for example given by law.
Knowledge and Understanding:
Investigations and Information retrieval:
Multidisciplinary Competences:
Content
1. Material selection as a part of product design: strategy, factors affecting strategy and materia characterisation.
2. Material selection process: process steps, factors affecting selection and data retrieval to support selection.

Teaching methods
Lectures and applied learning tasks
The responsible and transparent use of AI applications is encouraged in this course. Instructions for using artificial intelligence can be found in chapter 3.2 (https://help.jamk.fi/raportointiohje/fi/3-kirjoittamisprosessi/tekoalyn-kaytto-oppimistehtavissa-ja-opinnaytetyossa/) of the thesis reporting instructions. If necessary, the instructions for each learning assignment contain more detailed information on how to use it in more detail in this course.
Student workload
Lectures 16 h
Learning assignments 38 h
Total 54 h
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The assessment is carried out through restorable learning tasks.
Accepted: The student is familiar with the significance of the material selection process in product design, the stages of the selection process and is able to apply it to practice. You use reliable and wide-ranging source material.
Rejected: The student is unfamiliage with the steps in the material selection process and is unable to apply them to practice.
Qualifications
Student masters the basic terminology. He recognizes materials used in mechanical engineerig, their mechanical properties and most common applications.
Further information
Assessment is based on individual learning tasks.
