Objective
Competence in Material Technology is needed in material selection, when analyzing material failures and selecting different production methods.
You will learn the basic terminology and diagrams and fracture surfaces related to basic material terminology. You will learn how the environment will affect on different materials and also the effect of material selection on sustainable development. You will be familiar with materials used in engineering, technical properties and most common applications. You also understand and the effects of different materials on the environment.
Knowledge and understanding;
You are familiar with materials used in engineering and how inner structure and changes in structure will affect material properties. You will understand the effect of environment in use of materials.
Investigations and information retrieval:
You have the ability to make information retrieval related to material technology. You can make experimental tests and work in laboratory environment.
Content
Material inner structure, mechanical properties and the effect of inner structure on properties. Effect of working and heat treatment on properties. Environmental effect on materials and the effect of materials on the environment. Material groups and laboratory work.

Tasks
Lectures, learning tasks based on application. Learning assignments are done and returned both individually and in groups. Laboratory exercises.
Free-form anonymous feedback is collected in the middle of the course.
The implementation of the course is based on contact and distance learning. During the course, students work in groups on three assessed learning assignments, which are returned in writing. In addition, written assignments or returnable exercises to the online learning environment are performed independently. The course includes one laboratory day.
If the student has not attended the classes of the starting week and does not return the assignment 1 by the deadline of 30.8.2024, he/she will be removed from the course and will not be able to participate in this implementation.
The responsible and transparent use of AI applications is encouraged in this course. Instructions for using artificial intelligence can be found in chapter 3.2 (https://help.jamk.fi/raportointiohje/fi/3-kirjoittamisprosessi/tekoalyn-kaytto-oppimistehtavissa-ja-opinnaytetyossa/) of the thesis reporting instructions. If necessary, the instructions for each learning assignment contain more detailed information on how to use it in more detail in this course.
Exam schedules
Exam in the last contact lectures of the course. Two replays
Completion alternatives
The course is based on contact learning and independent working.
The assessment of previous competence is made on the first contacts.
Student workload
Lectures 14 h,
laboratory work 3 h,
independent work 118 h.
A total of 135 h of learning work.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Assessment is based on mid-term exams, assignments and laboratory work.
Sufficient (1): You are familiar with basic terminology, but you can not interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces. You know how environment affects materials.
Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with basic terminology, you can interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces and you are familiar with environmental affects on materials, but you can not interpret them in practice.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3): You are familiar with basic terminology, you can interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces and you are familiar with environmental affects on materials, but you can not benefit the knowledge when selecting materials and interpreting failures.
Very good (4): You master basic terminology, you can interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces and you are familiar with environmental affects on materials. You can benefit the knowledge quite well when selecting materials and interpreting failures.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You master basic terminology, you can interpret diagrams and fracture surfaces and you are familiar with environmental affects on materials. You can benefit the knowledge well when selecting materials and interpreting failures.
Qualifications
No prerequisite.
Further information
In addition to the midterm/exam results, the assessment of the course is based on graded learning tasks and laboratory reports.
