Objective
Course purpose
During this course you rehearse and reinforce mathematical knowledge and skills needed in the beginning of your studies.
Course competences
EUR-ACE: Knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and understanding of the mathematics and other basic sciences underlying their engineering specialisation, at a level necessary to achieve the other programme outcomes.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course you recall basic algebraic operations and rules for numbers and symbols, and formulas related to common geometric shapes. You understand the difference between an expression and an equation. You are able to apply what you have learned to solve simple problems related to your own field of study.
Content
Basic algebraic operations, the notion of square root, rules for exponents, simplification of polynomial expressions and simple rational expressions, simple linear and quadratic polynomial equations, percentages, simple geometry and trigonometry for right triangles, basics of functions, verbal problems.
Location and time
The course workspace will open for you as soon as you enroll in the course.
The course begins on 7.4. with a presentation of the course in Zoom at the course Zoom address https://jamk.zoom.us/j/69210831752, Passcode: 597181 at 17:30 - 18:30. The presentation can later be viewed on a recording, the address of which will appear on the front page of the workspace.
All course contents will open on April 8th and close on May 22nd at 17:00. The course will end and the workspace will close on May 27th at 23:55.
The final exam that will conclude this implementation will be held on Thursday 22.5. at 17:00 - 19:30 in a web-controlled manner at the Zoom addresses of the monitoring groups to be announced later. Log in to the final exam control address already at 17:00 to check your identity and test environment. In the final exam, scratch paper is allowed, but formulas or electronic formulas and calculators or calculator programs are not allowed. The supervision of the final exam takes place with the help of the student's webcam or mobile phone used as a surveillance camera. More detailed instructions can be found on the Final exam tab in the workspace.
Materials
The material is in the learning environment, and it consists of files, videos, exercises by pen and paper and automatic tests.
Teaching methods
Notice! This implementation is an elective course for those intending to become multimodal students in energy and environmental engineering and mechanical engineering. Other students will be directed to other implementations of the corresponding course.
Course is web-based self-directed course in Moodle environment. There is no contact lessons on this course.
Guiding for use of the environment in Zoom on Mon 7.4. at 17:30 - 18:30.
Guiding for the final exam in Zoom on Mon 19.5. at 17:30 - 18:30
Exam schedules
When you get enough points for the automatically scored practice test assignments and you have also completed the booklet assignments, you will have access to the pass tests. The pass tests are taken at your own pace. The time limit for each test is one hour. You can take each completion test up to three times. You can take each pass test three times.
Pass tests must be passed before the final examination.
Register for the final exam according to the instructions to receive the proctoring address!
Completion alternatives
There are no alternative ways of completing the course
Student workload
Independent work 79 h, exam 2 h.
When the course lasts about 6 weeks and there are 6 topics to cover, 13 hours are available for one subject area.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
You are able to simplify simple polynomial- and rational expressions and evaluate expressions numerically. You recognise the difference between an expression and an equation. You can explain how simplifying an expression differs from the process of solving an equation. You are able to solve simple linear and quadratic polynomial equations. You can solve the edges and angles of right triangles. You can solve simple problems with equations. You know the notation for functions, are able to read the values of a function from a graph, and compute values of a given function using the functions expression. You recognise the equation of a line, are able to draw the line by using it, and you can determine the equation of a line from a picture.
Further information
Each pass test taken at your own pace can earn a maximum of 12 points. The maximum score for the proctored final exam is 64 points.
The selection score is the sum of the pass test points and the final exam score. The applicant must score at least 50 points in total in order to be admitted. Applicants are selected in order of points with the highest score first.
This course is accepted if the score for each passing test is at least 9 points and the final exam is approved.
