Objective
Purpose of the course
In this course, you will learn the basics of legislation related to mental health and substance abuse services, familiarise yourself with the service chains that provide mental health abuse and crisis services, and familiarise yourself with clients’ guidance processes.

Objectives
After completing this course, you have learned to reflect on your own values and attitudes towards mental health disorders and substance abuse issues. You understand the diversity of the phenomena and issues of substance abuse and mental health. You are familiar with substance abuse and mental health services and the legislation governing them. You have practised bringing up the subject
and you know how to utilise the principles of motivating discussion in client guidance. You also recognise the stages of a crisis and know how to support your client in coping with the crisis

Teaching methods
During the course you will participate in contact teaching online (webinars) and on campus. You will be prepared for the webinars and on campus according to the instructions given in the module. You will learn by listening to lectures, doing group work, a video, a field trip to a substance abuse unit and various exercises. You will also hear lectures from experts in the field of experience and professional life.
Employer connections
The course involves expert cooperation with the Crisis Centre Mobile, the Central Finland Welfare Region, organisations and projects. Students will make a study visit to one of the operational units of substance abuse work.
