Objective
In this course, you will gain an understanding of the energy sector, its key concepts, environmental impacts, and climate and energy policies. Upon completing the course, you will have a better understanding of the principles of sustainable energy production and consumption, as well as the significance of climate actions. Your awareness of the effects of energy use on the environment and related challenges will increase, and you will be able to apply your knowledge in practical situations.
You will also deepen your understanding of the importance of resource efficiency and how resources can be used most effectively as they become scarce. Additionally, you will explore the significance of resource efficiency and how businesses can improve their resource efficiency while simultaneously reducing their environmental impacts. You will become familiar with the principles and practices of the circular economy. After completing the course, you will be familiar with the concept and methods of environmental impact assessment. You will learn how to assess the environmental impacts of various activities and decisions, and how to utilize this information in decision-making.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
You will understand the environmental aspects closely associated with energy production and develop an understanding of how material flows can be optimized and recycled efficiently to conserve resources and reduce waste. You will comprehend the significance of sustainable energy solutions and how they can help mitigate environmental impacts.
COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK
In this course, you will actively participate in class discussions and various learning situations. You will engage in discussions on course topics with fellow students, collectively pondering the subject matter. You will lead by example, encouraging and inspiring others to engage in open and constructive dialogue. Sharing your knowledge and expertise with others is encouraged. The course includes presentations, group discussions, and promotes collaborative learning among students. You will learn team collaboration, time management, and responsibility distribution.
Content
Energy sector concepts, energy production solutions, environmental impacts of operations, energy consumption targets, climate and energy policies, regulatory measures, emissions and their effects, principles of sustainable development, the concept of resource efficiency, and resource efficiency in business.
Location and time
On-campus teaching at the Rajakatu campus.

Lecture materials and other additional course materials are available on Moodle.
Teaching methods
Lectures, information retrieval, and applied learning tasks. The tasks include both group and individual assignments. The first assignment of the course must be completed within three weeks from the start of the implementation. Those who do not complete the assignment will be removed from the course.
Exam schedules
There is no separate exam in the course; instead, the grade is based on the points from the learning assignments.
Completion alternatives
The accreditation of skills acquired in other ways will be agreed upon with the course instructor on a case-by-case basis.
Student workload
On-campus teaching: 45 hours, learning assignments and independent study: 90 hours. Total: 135 hours of learning work.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Passable (1): You have a basic understanding of the national distribution of energy production and consumption. You have knowledge of specific environmental impacts and are aware of climate and energy policy goals and their regulatory mechanisms. Your knowledge of the circular economy is at a sufficient level, and you are acquainted with some circular economy business models.
Satisfactory (2): You have an understanding of the national distribution of energy production and consumption. You are aware of some of the environmental impacts associated with the energy sector. You also have knowledge of certain climate and energy policy goals and regulatory mechanisms. Your knowledge of the circular economy is satisfactory, and you are familiar with circular economy business models.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3): You have a good understanding of the national energy production and consumption landscape. You are knowledgeable about various environmental impacts and challenges associated with the energy sector's operations. You are well-versed in climate and energy policy objectives and are familiar with their regulatory mechanisms. Your knowledge of the circular economy and resource efficiency is extensive, and you are acquainted with their business models. You have the ability to apply these learnings in practical situations.
Very good (4): You have an excellent knowledge and understanding of the national distribution of energy production and consumption. You have a strong understanding of the environmental impacts and challenges associated with the energy sector's operations. You are well-versed in climate and energy policy objectives and are familiar with their regulatory mechanisms. Your knowledge of the circular economy and resource efficiency is extensive, and you are acquainted with their business models. You have the ability to effectively apply these learnings in practical situations.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You have excellent knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of the national distribution of energy production and consumption. You possess a profound understanding of the environmental impacts and challenges associated with the energy sector's operations. You are extremely well-versed in climate and energy policy objectives and their regulatory mechanisms. Your knowledge of the circular economy and resource efficiency is outstanding, and you are familiar with their business models. You have the ability to apply this learning in practical situations effectively.
