Objective

This course gives you the ability to understand the role of process equipment in industrial processes and their safe and sustainable use. You gain expertise that is highly valued in the workplace for design, equipment selection, and process development.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY COMPETENCE
After completing the course, you can view process engineering solutions holistically and understand how safety and cost-efficiency influence design. You are able to identify the constraints that processes impose on equipment selection and overall design.

APPLICATION OF ENGINEERING TO PRACTICE
You learn to apply technical solutions in practical design and recognize challenges in production processes. You master creating P&ID diagrams using CAD software, which is a key part of the design process and course assessment.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
By the end of the course, you understand the roles and differences of process equipment and their significance in design. You can select and apply equipment in real situations, create accurate P&ID diagrams with CAD tools, and take safety and sustainability requirements into account in sizing and design.

Content

In this course, you learn the role and selection of key process equipment. You gain practical skills in creating P&ID diagrams using CAD software, which is an essential tool for process design and documentation. The main topics include process safety and sizing principles, enabling you to make well-founded equipment choices and apply them to industrial processes. You also develop the ability to evaluate technical solutions holistically, considering safety, cost-efficiency, and process constraints. These skills strengthen your capability to solve practical design challenges.

The responsible and transparent use of AI applications is encouraged in this course. Instructions for using artificial intelligence can be found in chapter 3.2 (https://help.jamk.fi/raportointiohje/fi/3-kirjoittamisprosessi/tekoalyn-kaytto-oppimistehtavissa-ja-opinnaytetyossa/) of the thesis reporting instructions. If necessary, the instructions for each learning assignment contain more detailed information on how to use it in more detail in this course.

Exam schedules

The exam will be held in October/November, with two retake opportunities at separately announced dates.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Avoidant (1): You recognize the basics and terminology, but have significant gaps in interpreting key issues. You can copy the diagram and understand that it consists of sub-processes.

Satisfactory (2): You know the basics and the terminology, but you are lacking in the application of key issues. You understand that the overall process consists of sub-processes and the importance of automation in process adjustments

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You know the key points of the course and apply them independently when creating process diagrams. You know the standards for diagram drawing and you know how to make justified choices when preparing process diagrams and necessary lists. You understand the starting points of dimensioning and the operation of control circuits. You know the importance of project scheduling and title management in planning
Commendable (4): You master the key issues of process technology and know how to apply them and justify your choice. The diagrams you make in the course are clear and easy to read. You visualize material flows, unit processes and hardware solutions and the dependencies between them well

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

You master the key issues of process technology and apply them to create typical new solutions, and you are able to dimension the selected components and justify your choice

Qualifications

Basic knowledge of mathematics and physics.

- 40% test
- 60% exercises

According to the 3-week rule, those enrolled in the course will be removed from the implementation if they have not completed the task informed at the start.
