Objective

The aim of the course is learning to understand social rehabilitation as a support form for individuals’ and communities’ agency, a professional activity and a part of the service system and network-based work. On this course, students explore rehabilitation as a social process.

Intended learning outcome:

You know how agency can be strengthened by promoting the realisation of equality, non-discrimination, diversity and accessibility. You know how to work sensitively and dialogically with vulnerable individuals, communities and networks.

You are able to support individuals, groups and communities in different operating environments and changes related to life situations in a goal-oriented and client-centric manner. You are able to use a proactive and rehabilitating work approach that promotes well-being in social rehabilitation.

You know what structured social work is, and you are able to influence decision-making on social rehabilitation at the level of the individual, community and society. You recognise structures and processes that produce inequalities, underprivilege and well-being. You know how the quality and impact of social rehabilitation are evaluated and monitored based on information.

Content

The core content of the course comprises the key concepts, operating environments and methods of social rehabilitation as well as the legislation and service system related to it. On this course, students examine social rehabilitation as a social process associated with the individual's rehabilitation and communities’ functioning that supports non-discrimination, participation and agency. Students reflect on possibilities of exerting influence, structural factors, and how the quality and impact of social rehabilitation are evaluated and monitored based on information.

Teaching methods

The course is delivered online, including scheduled webinars on weekdays.

In the webinars, you will learn about the concepts, settings and principles of social rehabilitation and the regulations governing its activities through lectures and discussions. You will also learn about social rehabilitation concepts and legislation by completing independent online assignments in the Moodle workspace. In a group assignment, you will explain and describe what social rehabilitation means as a social process supporting inclusion and agency, and as an interaction with vulnerable people. You will also describe and reflect on the structural elements, quality and effectiveness of social rehabilitation.

The learning method will be the inquiry-based learning model, which aims to build an understanding of social rehabilitation by explaining the phenomena involved and their interrelationships and meanings.In accordance with the inquiry-based learning model, knowledge about social rehabilitation will be built during the course through collaborative sharing of ideas and reflection. Therefore, it is important that you participate in each webinar.

Webinars are interactive learning situations and participation requires a working camera, headphones and microphone. Webinars create the conditions and basis for group work. The webinars will also include time to work with the group. The webinars will provide guidance and support for your work and progress on the course. If necessary, you can also contact the teachers via the Moodle discussion area.

Exam schedules

The course does not include an exam.
There is a possibility to complete a group assignment.
There is no limit to the number of times you can complete the online assignments independently.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You are able to describe the concepts and operating environments of social rehabilitation and the legislation and service system related to it. You are able to describe social rehabilitation as a social process that supports participation and agency from the perspectives of the individual and the community. You are able to describe the structural factors and possibilities of exerting influence associated with social rehabilitation. You are able to describe how the quality and impact of social rehabilitation are evaluated and monitored based on information.

Qualifications

You know how to act professionally in different encounters and interactive situations of guidance work. You are able to act constructively when guiding clients and in network co-operation. You understand the significance of psychosocial support in client work and guidance work.

You are able to describe the social welfare and health care service system and name acts that govern it. You are able to describe what the client's participation and agency in the service system mean and which values and principles guide the service system. 

Further information

Passing the course is based on participation in webinars and successful completion of independent online assignments and group work. The group assignment and the independent web assignments will be assessed on the basis of separate assessment criteria, which will be announced at the beginning of the course in the Moodle work space.
The group assignment will be assessed on a pass/fail scale.
The pass mark for the online assignments to be completed independently will be indicated in the Moodle work area in the assignment. There is no limit to the number of times the assignment can be completed.

Approval policy: A decision on the possible approval of the course must be made before the first webinar of the course, as the group work will already start in the first webinar. Applications for accreditation must demonstrate competence in relation to the objectives and content of the course. Applications for admission should be addressed to Anne Koivisto.
