Objective
You will deepen your competence in the use of child- and family-centred methods. After the course, you will be able to design and use diverse child protection methods when working with children and families. Additionally, you will be able to work in a resource- and solution-oriented manner. When using the methods, you are capable of taking into account the participation of families and the child’s point of view.

Teaching methods
The teaching and learning methods used in the course include classroom teaching (including a day of cooperation with university social work students), video-based interaction exercises, a webinar (multidisciplinary case day with health students), independent work and a written learning task in pairs. The learning method used is integrative pedagogy, which combines theory, practice, reflection and socio-cultural knowledge, i.e. knowledge learned through participation.
Both the webinar and the in-school tutorial are interactive learning situations and you will be prepared for them according to the instructions given in advance. A working camera, headphones and microphone are required to participate in the webinar.
During the face-to-face learning days, you will receive guidance and support in working and progressing through the course.

Completion alternatives
You can apply for admission with previous equivalent higher education studies (content/objectives/extent), or with at least one year (12 months) of work experience in child welfare work that is relevant to the content and objectives of the course. Discuss your competences with your tutor and, if necessary, submit an e-application at least two weeks before the start of the course.
Student workload
21h face-to-face in school, 8h preparation for face-to-face, 6h webinar, 8h interaction exercises and preparation, 92h independent work and written learning assignment in pairs. Total 135 h.

You are capable of substantiating his or her method-related choices. You are aware of the solution and resource-centred working approach. Additionally, you are aware of child- and family-oriented methods. In a written assignment, you are capable of describing various kinds of subject area content, partly in compliance with the JAMK reporting instructions.
Satisfactory 2
You are capable of substantiating his or her method-related choices in an ordinary manner. You are aware of the solution and resource-centred working approach. Additionally, you are aware of and recognises child- and family-oriented methods. In a written assignment, you are capable of describing various kinds of subject area content, partly in compliance with the JAMK reporting instructions.

You are capable of aptly substantiating and assessing method-related choices. You are capable of applying the solution and resource-centred working approach. Additionally, you are capable of planning, executing and assessing child- and family-oriented methods in child welfare work. In written assignments, you demonstrate an ability to describe and substantiate various subject area phenomena in compliance with the JAMK reporting instructions.

Qualifications
You understand the meaning of child protection, working environments and processes. In addition you recognize the needs of children, young people and families as a starting point for work. You recognize the factors that cause the need for child protection in society.
Further information
The course will be assessed by a video interaction exercise including both self-assessment and peer feedback (approved-fail) and a written learning task (0-5). The learning task includes a personal self-assessment of the student based on the learning objectives of the course. The numerical grade for the course is given on the basis of the written learning task.
