Objective

The aim of the course is that you familiarise with the terminology of work ability and functioning assessment and different ways to assist persons to mobilise.

Course competences:

Physiotherapy assessment (pt)
Physiotherapy methods (pt)
Expertise in theoretical basis of rehabilitation and occupational therapy (ot)
Clinical reasoning and occupational therapy process enabling participation (ot)

Learning objective of the course:

Understand the broad scope of work ability and functioning assessment and related concepts. You know what valid and reliable methods mean in the assessment of work ability and functioning. You can select evidence-based, person centred methods for assessing work ability and functioning. Know how to use assistive devices to support employee’s ergonomics and physical activity of clients and their ability to work and function.

Content

The main content of the course includes terminology and assessment methods related to the assessment of work ability, functioning and quality of life (interview, observation, tests and measurements) using TOIMIA database. In addition you learn guidance and how to assist with mobility and transfers, physical ergonomics and related assistive devices (including wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, mobility aids, standing lifts, patient lifts, elbow rails, sliding boards, transfer and litter belts). The course also covers the assistive device process and the criteria for assistive technology.

The course will take place in spring 2026.

Teaching methods

The course uses online teaching (webinar), independent study, and contact teaching at school as teaching and learning methods.

Completion alternatives

If you have longer-term work experience (at least 6 months) related to the course content, you can apply for credit through Peppi using the e-ahot form and describe your skills in detail, reflecting the course content. Address the application to the course teacher.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You will recognise and can name the different assessment methods. You know what valid and reliable methods mean when assessing work ability and functioning. You know how to select evidence-based, person centred methods for assessing work ability, functioning and quality of life using the TOIMIA database. You know how to use mobility products to support worker ergonomics and client physical activity and work ability and functioning. You can describe the steps in the assistive technology process and the criteria for access to assistive technology.
