Objective

After completing the course, you master fluent voice leading, and are able to reharmonize diverse compositions creatively. You are able to arrange music in a stylistically appropriate manner for standard pop and jazz ensembles, taking into account the idiosyncrasies of the instruments used in the arrangement. You are able to write accompanying lines and additional structural parts for pop and jazz compositions, if necessary.

VOICE LEADING

REHARMONIZATION
- diatonic and mediantic reharmonization
- reharmonization of tonic and subdominant chords
- reharmonization of cadential areas
- management of bass lines and chromaticism
- deceptive resolution and free reharmonization

HARMONIZATION OF MELODY
- 2–3-part harmony
- counter-melodies, obligato lines and riffs
- 4–5-part sectional harmony (melody-derived, harmony-derived, and line writing)

ORCHESTRATION
- writing for the rhythm section
- writing for sectional instruments (string and wind instruments and the human voice)
- instrument ranges, their transposition and their characteristics

Materials

The study material is self-study material with learning assignments distributed during the course, as well as other material that can be accessed online. All the material used during the course is in electronic format.

Teaching methods

During the course, you participate in contact learning and carry out individual learning assignments on a regular basis. You will also get acquainted with the electronic study material distributed during the course.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass (S):
You write fluent and stylistically appropriate arrangements for various ensembles. With your arrangements, you demonstrate that you understand the following concepts and arrangement techniques:
- voice leading
- reharmonization
- harmonization of melody
- orchestration

You demonstrate that you are able to evaluate your own competence and its development. You acquire, process and critically evaluate the information you have acquired. You take responsibility for your own and the group's learning.

Further information

In addition to the evaluation of independent learning assignments performed by the teacher, continuous feedback and self-assessment are used as evaluation methods. Some of the individual learning assignments are shared within the group and peer-assessed.
