Objective
The object of the course:
The objective is to reach language skills corresponding to level A2.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
After completing this course, you can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, studies and leisure. You can understand simple texts on familiar topics.
You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where French is spoken. You can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. You can write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Course competences:
The course prepares and equips you to act and work in an international and multicultural environment.
The learning objectives of the course:
You can apply basic language skills in routine communication situations. You can understand the main points of clear speech and short texts on topics that are familiar to you. You can write a short text on a familiar topic. You understand the cultural differences between your home country and France.
Starting level: A1.2. Objective: A2.2. (according to CEFR)
Content
In this course, you will learn oral and written communication, especially in everyday situations related to exchange studies and internships.
Communication: You will learn to use the vocabulary related to higher education, discuss practical matters related to studies and leisure, express your opinions, and find information about services on French-speaking websites.
Grammar: You will learn to master various past tenses (especially the passé composé and the imperfect), as well as the French conditional tense. You will also learn to use direct and indirect object pronouns.
Cultural knowledge: You deepen your knowledge about the characteristics of the culture of French-speaking countries.

Teaching methods
Kurssin ajoitus: 1.09.2025 - 8.12.2025 (rästitentit 16.12.)
Aikataulu: Tunnit maanantaisin Zoomissa klo 16.15-17.45. Luennoille osallistuminen on osa kurssin suorittamista. Viikolla 42 ei ole opetusta Keski-Suomen syyslomien vuoksi.
Kurssin suoritus: Kurssilla osallistut viikottaisille Zoom-luennoille sekä harjoittelet itsenäisesti suorittamalla harjoitustehtäviä verkossa. Lisäksi kurssilla on kirjallista ja/tai suullista tehtävää, jotka palautetaan opettajalle. Kurssille osallistuminen vaatii mikrofonin ja kameran käyttöä.
Arvointi: kurssilla on kirjallista 2 tenttiä, jotka tulee suorittaa annettujen aikataulujen puitteissa. Tentit sekä arvioitavat tehtävät arvioidaan asteikolla hyväksytty/hylätty.
Huom! Kurssiarvointi on syksystä 2024 alkaen hyväksytty/hylätty. Jos haluat numeroarvioinnin (1 – 5), se on mahdollista saada erillisenä todistuksena. Tarve numeeriseen arviointiin on ilmoitettava opettajalle heti opintojakson alussa. Arviointiasteikkoa ei voi vaihtaa hyväksytty/hylätty -arvioinnista numeeriseen sen jälkeen, kun ensimmäinen tehtävä tai tentti on arvioitu.

Kaksi tenttiä + kaksi arvioitavaa tehtävää kurssin aikana.
Uusintamahdollisuus 16.12. tai muuna opettajan kanssa sovittuna aikatauluna.
Student workload
Kontaktiopetus 19,5h, tentit 2h, itsenäinen/virtuaalinen työskentely 59,5h.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Pass:
You demonstrate a basic command of the language in relation to the course contents and objectives. You can apply your language skills in routine speaking situations, although there may be frequent pauses in speech. You understand the main points of clear speech and short texts on familiar topics. You can write a short text on a familiar topic. You may still have some faltering with pronunciation, vocabulary and language structures.
Fail:
The level of competence does not reach the minimum requirements, or the assignments and exams of the course have not been successfully completed.
NB! If you need a numerical grade (1 - 5), it can be obtained on a separate certificate. The need for a numerical assessment must be communicated to the teacher at the beginning of the course. After the first assessed assignment or test, it is no longer possible to change the grading scale from pass-fail to a numerical scale.
Qualifications
French level A1.2 - A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/sites/default/files/cefr-en.pdf). For example, French 1 and French 2 courses successfully completed at JAMK UAS (10 ECTS), or successfully completed French courses 1 – 4 in a Finnish high school as a B3-language (approx. 2 years).
