Objective

Course Purpose:
In this course, you will deepen your understanding of the societal connections of education and learning. Upon completion, you will be able to identify the various ways in which social structures, systems, political guidance, and legislation influence the work of teachers and the learning of students. You will gain the ability to apply sociological concepts to examine these issues and to consider how you, as a teacher, can influence societal phenomena and changes visible in education in ways that are meaningful for students’ learning.

- You are familiar with and understand the theoretical foundations of educational sociology and can apply them to the analysis of education and learning.
- You can identify educational policy instruments and understand the societal meanings behind them.

- You can examine your roles within the structures of education and upbringing.

Assessment Criteria

Societal Competence:
- You understand and are familiar with key concepts of educational sociology and can apply them in the analysis of education and upbringing.
- You recognize educational policy instruments and can critically examine them from the perspective of the societal meanings of education.

Competence in learner diversity:
- You recognize societal structures that influence students’ learning.
- You are able to apply educational sociological knowledge to understand learners' backgrounds and to build an encouraging learning environment.
