Objective

After the course you are able to do the following:
- Recognize the practices and rules of Finnish working life
- Recognize one’s own skills and describe them to others
- Manage the job-seeking process from writing job applications to job interviews
- See entrepreneurship as an employment opportunity.

The achievement of those learning objectives may vary according to the lectures you select from the course program. The info sessions happen at Jyväskylä University but JAMK students are also welcome to join.

Content

Better understanding of the mechanisms of modern working life and developing knowledge and skills required when searching for work. The course gives basic information on employment, search for work and working life. The themes of the lectures include, for example, the Finnish working culture, internship, employment and self-employment, writing of a CV and understanding your own competences. You can select lectures from the course program according to personal interests.

Completion alternatives

Completion method: Participation in six (6) lectures and/or workshops that can be selected freely from the course programme, and a final essay (length 3-6 pages) . The course must be fully completed during the term autumn 2018. It is also possible to attend individual lectures without participating in the course. Participation is verified by signing the participation list during each lecture. Final essayDescription of your own competence – Create a free-form description of your skills. Make yourself questions, for example: Where are you good at? What makes you happy or enthusiastic? In what situations have you got good feedback? When writing the description, consider your competence as a whole comprising academic substance competence, work experience, hobbies and generic working life skills. The target is that you could use parts of your text in your job applications.Find 1-2 Finnish employers (name them) that could hire you considering your education, work experience and skills acquired otherwise. Describe how your competence would meet the needs of these employers. Length of the essay 3–6 pages.Return the final essay by email to: muru.linjala@jyu.fi. You can return the essay anytime during the term fall 2018, however, no later than Fri 14th November, 2018.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You need to join the minimum amount of info sessions (to be defined later) and write a short reflection report on the topics.

Qualifications

No requirements for preliminary competence. The course is suitable as part of other optional studies for all international students.
