Content scheduling

The course has a weekly lecture and a separate workshop where we do exercises together. During the workshops, you can work on the course tasks.

Objective

The object of the course

To make efficient use of your personal laptop on the task at hand, you have to know the capabilities of the operating system it runs and the alternatives available. Market leaders Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS and various GNU/Linux distributions have their distinctive differences, and you have to know them to be able to make correct decisions on choosing the platform for the desktop environment.

The learning objectives of the course

After the course you have knowledge of three different operating systems and their key differences. You also have basic knowledge on how to operate with the command line interface of each of the three operating systems.

Content

You will work with macOS, Linux and Windows efficiently and diversely. You will do varied tasks which require you to use the basic tools unique to each operating system, and you will go through the terminology related to macOS, Linux and Windows. You’ll get familiar with the differences between each operating system and will be able to choose which operating system fits best on varied use cases and the course will teach you the basics of operating on command line interfaces.

Lectures are held live on Jamk's main campus, Rajakatu 35. The schedule is listed separately in Peppi.

Exam schedules

Course does not include an exam. Passing the course requires successful return of the course assignments.

Completion alternatives

It is possible to complete the course by taking a skills test during the first lecture.

Student workload

1 credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work, which means that the load of 3 credits is on average 81 hours.

The 81 hours will divide roughly in the following:
- Lectures & exercise labs (contact lessons): 26,5 h
- Self-study: 54,5 h

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You are able to work with Linux, macOS and Windows efficiently and diversely. You are able to use the basic tools unique to each operating system to complete tasks, and you understand the terminology related. You understand the differences and are able to choose which operating system fits on the use case at hand. You are able to operate on commend line interfaces of the operating systems on a basic level.

No prerequisites.

Further information

This course is evaluated as passed or failed, there will be no numerical evaluation of the course. To pass the course, you need to complete all of the assignments.
