Objective

The object of the course
After completing the course, you will have a basic understanding of the theory of the Blockchain technology and you are able to apply it in the context of the business administration.

Course competences
Business competence

After completing the course, the student knows the basics of the theory of the Blockchain technology, the key concepts related to the Blockchain technology and understands how the Blockchain technology can be used for from a business perspective. The student knows how to apply the Blockchain technology to business applications and understands the possibilities, dependencies and limitations of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective.

Content

The course is divided into two sections: (1) theory and (2) business administration.

Content of the theory section:

· What is the Blockchain technology

· The promise of the Blockchain technology

· The building blocks of the Blockchain technology

· Distributed ledgers

· Machine-based trust

· Consensus

· Public vs. Private Blockchain networks

· Satoshi Nakamoto and the idea of Bitcoin

· The development tools of the Blockchain

· Theory exercises

· Theoretical compulsory assignment

Contents of the business administration section:

· Business opportunities of the Blockchain technology

· The Blockchain in the financial sector

· What practical applications already exist that utilize the Blockchain technology?

· Smart contracts

· What will the Blockchain technology enable in the future?

· Compulsory assignment in business administration

Materials

Material in an e-learning environment by teacher. In addition, the teacher recommends supplementary material. The student also utilizes library material or freely available online material in learning assignments during the course

Teaching methods

Video lectures, written material, assignments and learning assignments. The course does not include contact teaching.

The course is scheduled for five weeks. Working is independent, in pairs or in groups. You will receive either individual or group feedback from the teacher about the learning tasks you have completed in the course.

The e-learning implementation requires compatibility between your terminal and the learning environment. You need a headset, a webcam, and a working network connection. The distance learning implementation includes learning tasks that you can complete in writing, by video, or by creating an audio file.

Student workload

· Familiarization with the study material, lecture videos and assignments: 30 hours

· Other written course material: 35 hours

· Independent familiarization with the topic and online material: 30 hours

· Learning assignments: 40 hours

Total 135 hours (work amount for one credit is 27 hours)

Adequate 1:
You can interpret the basics of the Blockchain technology theory and related key concepts. You can give an example of where the Blockchain technology can be used from a business perspective. You can compare the business applications of the Blockchain technology and understand the possibilities, dependencies and limitations of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective.

Satisfactory 2:
You can present the basics of the theory of the Blockchain technology and the key concepts related to it, and you can present where the Blockchain technology can be used for from a business perspective. You can apply the Blockchain technology to business applications and you can explain the possibilities, dependencies and limitations of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good 3:
You can analyze the basics of the Blockchain technology theory and related key concepts. You can compare different solutions utilizing the Blockchain technology from a business perspective, and you can summarize and compare a few of the application areas of the Blockchain technology both in Finland and abroad. You can question the use of the Blockchain technology in business applications and you can also question the possibilities, dependencies and limitations of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective.

Very Good 4:
You can interpret the theory of the Blockchain technology and reflect on the importance of the key concepts involved. You can draw conclusions about the use of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective and you can prioritize between several different blockchain technology applications both in Finland and abroad. You can redefine business applications that use the Blockchain technology and you can defend and critique the possibilities, dependencies and limitations of the Blockchain technology from a business perspective.

Excellent 5:
You can propose a new theoretical basis for the basics of the Blockchain technology and you can theorize the key concepts involved. You know how to convince where the Blockchain technology can be used from a business perspective, and you can recommend the application of the Blockchain technology from Finland and abroad. You know how to collaborate in the design of business applications that utilize the Blockchain technology, and you know how to produce new perspectives on business opportunities that utilize the Blockchain technology. From the perspectives, you can prove dependencies as well as limitations.
