Objective

The students have a general knowledge and understanding of the main contents of industrial design and its significance as part of product development. The course provides students with a basic readiness for cooperation between engineers, industrial designers and other professionals. The students can, to some extent, apply their competence to design products or services.

EA-TR EUR-ACE Transferable skills: The student shows effectiveness in exercises and assignments related to industrial design by acting alone and/or in a team.

TKNSU Competence in design: The students master the technical documentation of industrial design projects. They can take into consideration the whole product life cycle in industrial design. The students understand the meaning of team work in product development.

YHTYR Entrepreneurship skills: The students have the ability to look for customer-friendly, sustainable and economically-viable solutions in industrial design.

YHTVI Communication skills: The students are able to communicate in product development well, both orally and in writing in their mother tongue and know how to use communications technology industrial design development projects. The students are able to work in industrial design development networks.

Content

Industrial design as part of the development of competitive products. The main design principles and techniques. Industrial design as part of the product development process. Service design. Cooperation between marketing, engineering and design. Examples of the development and design of industrial products. Exercises.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Very good (4): The student masters the essential knowledge and skills and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to industrial design development tasks.

Good (3): The student masters the essential knowledge and skills and can apply them to industrial design development tasks:
- can explain the significance of the industrial design and innovation process among the other processes in a company
- is familiar with different types of industrial design development processes and can describe their progress from a product idea to a finished product in the market
- is familiar with the basic project management tools and can implement them in study projects
- can use creative working methods in the innovation and solution of practical problems

Satisfactory (2): The student is familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but can only satisfactorily apply them to industrial design development tasks.

Adequate (1): The student identifies the basic knowledge and terminology but can only sufficiently apply them to simple industrial design development tasks.
