Purpose of the course
The purpose of this course is to understand blockchain technology and the possibilities for its application.

Course intended learning outcome
You are familiar with the basics of the theory of blockchain technology, its key concepts and the backgrounds of the technology. You understand how the new blockchain technology can be utilised. You apply blockchain technology to business applications. You understand the dependencies and limitations of blockchain technology from the business and technology perspective. You carry out simple exercises related to blockchain technology in the Linux environment.

Content

The course is divided into three parts: (A) theory, (B) business administration and (C) technology
A) Content of the theory part:
Blockchain, promise of blockchain technology, blockchain building blocks, computational trust, consensus, public vs. private blockchains, Satoshi Nakamoto and the idea of Bitcoin
B) Content of the business administration part:
Blockchain business opportunities, blockchain in the financial sector, distributed networks and accounting books, the opportunities and future of blockchain technology, smart contracts
C) Content of the technology part:
Operating principle of symmetric and asymmetric encryption, compact algorithms, consensus methods: Proof-of-work and proof-of-stake, blockchain technology development tools

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass (S):
You are familiar with the key concepts of blockchain technology. You understand how the new blockchain technology can be utilised in business and what the limitations of the technology are. You report what you have learned in an understandable and appropriate manner.
