Objective

You will learn the basics of Finnish language structure (KPT change verbs, sentence structure, most common noun declension). You will be able to communicate in a simple way in nursing situations. You will be able to express opinions and feelings in a simple way. You will be introduced to the typical features of the Finnish communication culture and self-study methods.

You will be able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to things of immediate relevance. You will be able to produce simple sentences related to familiar and routine matters, including those in the field of nursing.

Content

You will learn to
• understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases, including those in the nursing field;
• describe your surroundings and your own health (e.g. basic personal and family information, health issues);
• express your opinions and feelings in a simple way; and
• communicate in a simple way in nursing situations (e.g. physical examination, taking the patient’s temperature, instructing the patient).

You will study
• self-directed language learning materials outside the classroom,
• language learning strategies, and
• the communication culture of Finland.
