Objective

Purpose of the course:
You will be familiar with the different types of foundation structures and methods of foundation construction and be able to select foundation structures based on the characteristics of the subsoil.

Objectives:
Basic knowledge: You will be able to explain the main regulations related to foundation works and the building foundation methods used in Finland. You know the influence of soil characteristics on the choice of foundation method. You will be able to describe construction excavations and backfilling and understand their safety aspects, also during winter work. You will be able to determine the vertical loads on foundations.
Advanced competence: You will be able to determine the size of a continuous footing based on loads and soil parameters. You will be able to design the debris protection of foundations. Be able to select a suitable foundation method for a building.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of foundation engineering materials, equipment, tools, technologies and processes and their limitations.
Communication and teamwork: be able to effectively communicate information, ideas and solutions in the field of civil engineering within an engineering community.
Interdisciplinary skills: the ability to manage complex technical or professional tasks or projects, taking responsibility for decision making.
Application of technology in practice: ability to perform geomechanical calculations.
Research and information retrieval: Ability to conduct literature searches related to civil engineering and to use and critically exploit scientific databases and other appropriate information sources.

Content

Determination of soil bearing capacity, determination of the size of continuous wall sensors, foundation investigations, determination of sensor loads.
Foundation methods, excavations, backfilling.
Dirt protection and its sizing, winter foundation work.

Qualifications

Geotechnical knowledge: identification of soil types, soil properties, hydraulic properties of soil, debris, basics of soil bearing capacity.
Knowledge of building construction techniques in relation to the House Nomenclature,

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the objectives of the course and is able to perform the tasks according to the objectives of the course according to the basic competences: foundation methods, excavations, backfilling, dirt protection, winter ground construction, ground investigations, determination of vertical loads of the foundation. The student can demonstrate his/her competence by reading the tasks according to the objectives.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the basic competences described in the objectives of the course. The student can demonstrate competence by describing the topics covered in the course in a systematic way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): the student has achieved the basic learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. In addition, they are able to articulate what they have learned in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.

Excellent (4): The student has achieved the basic learning outcomes of the course and at least part of the advanced learning outcomes: dimensioning of dirt protection, determining the bearing capacity of soil, determining the size of a continuous wall footing. The student will be able to describe the effects of different solutions, compare them and make informed choices between them.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): the student has achieved all the basic and almost all the advanced learning outcomes of the course. The student is able to evaluate the interrelationships and differences between different perspectives and solutions in a differentiated and critical manner. Competences are demonstrated in a coherent and multidimensional way.
