Objective

Purpose of the course:
The knowledge and skills required in this course will enable you to design load-bearing steel structures for demanding classes of construction and also to know the most relevant quality requirements for the fabrication and installation of steel structures.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge and understanding of the applicable analytical, design and research/development techniques and methods and their limitations in your area of specialisation. The ability to communicate effectively information, ideas, problems and solutions within the engineering community.
Communication and teamwork: ability to function effectively as an individual, team member and entrepreneur.
Interdisciplinary skills: ability to keep abreast of scientific and technological developments.
Practical application of technology: the ability to analyse complex technical products, processes and systems and to correctly interpret the results of such analyses, with the ability to select and have the practical skills to apply well-established analytical, computational and experimental techniques and methods appropriate to the situation.

Course objective:
You will be able to design and dimension load-bearing steel structures of the demanding class in the ultimate limit state and service limit state. You will be able to design multiaxially loaded connections and tubular beam trusses. You know the fire design of steel structures and know how to take into account the prevention of continuous collapse of buildings. You will be able to take into account the quality requirements during fabrication and installation of steel structures.
These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Content

1 cr: Design of steel columns in interaction situations considering stability
1 cr: In-depth design of connections in interaction with stresses in structural equilibrium 1 cr: In-depth design of connections in structural equilibrium
Fire design, Tubular beam trusses (rods and connections), Implementation specification.

Qualifications

Fundamentals of structural steel design Competences: material properties of steel products for structural design, design of structural elements of a steel frame (columns, beams), connections.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the course objectives and is able to perform the tasks according to the course objectives: design of steel columns in interaction situations with regard to stability, advanced design of joints, fire design, tubular beam trusses (rods and joints), implementation specification. Students can demonstrate their competence by performing tasks according to the objectives.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the issues described in the learning objectives of the course. The student can demonstrate competence by systematically describing the topics covered in the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. The student is able to articulate the learning in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.

Excellent (4). The student is able to describe the effects of different solutions and to make informed choices between alternatives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course with excellent results. In addition, the student is able to examine the topics of the course theoretically and apply them critically in practice. Competence is demonstrated in a coherent and multidimensional manner.
