Objective

The objective of the course

The academic track serves to prepare and activate you to complete their bachelor's thesis in the second year of your studies. You as a student in the Cross-cultural Management Track may choose to focus on a range of topics related to culture, communication, global virtual teams, education, human resource management, and conflict management.

At the completion of this course, you will be engaged in the bachelor's thesis process and understand the various components of a quality thesis.

Course competences

Learning to learn: You will have been exposed to and put into practice the skills of critical thinking, ability to review and synthesize knowledge from multiple sources, be able to acquire new knowledge and draw inferences and conclusions from various texts and contexts, and from the above, add to the research of the field.
Ethics: You will recognize and demonstrate academic/research skills that are applied in both ethical and responsible manners, in line with international and Jamk-wide standards of academic integrity.

The learning objectives of the course

At the end of this course, you will know and be able to apply the standards associated with quality academic research and reporting. Additionally, you will either have completed or be in the process of completing a bachelor's thesis meeting to the best of your ability the various components of quality research. Through this process, you will become knowledgeable and competent in a research topic of your choice.

Content

You and fellow students are engaged in project-oriented activities that extend their previous studies in cross-cultural management. This project may be the foundation of your thesis topic or independent of it. As well, theory, independent research, and support is offered for thesis research development and execution.

Qualifications

HBIB0014 Cross-cultural Management Essentials: Communication, Conflict, and Management Perspectives OR HB00CD21 Cross-Cultural Management. Approved, documented prior studies in intercultural communication or cross-cultural management may suffice as prerequisites for this track.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient (1): You will be aware that the culture of academics has its own practices and even what some of those are. You will have experienced the processes involved in retrieving and drawing on peer-reviewed literature, with a limited ability of identifying, comprehending, and interpreting the arguments of the papers' authors. Limited replication of this will be found in the final thesis. 1. You will be aware of the ethical foundations of academic research and the need to apply these principles responsibly.

Satisfactory (2): Through your exposure to the theoretical foundations of academic research and writing, you will demonstrate reasonable cursory levels of ability in establishing research criteria, drawing on a diversity of peer-reviewed research in establishing a foundation for your own research, articulating understanding of research methods and data collection, and interpreting and discussing the outcome of your research. You apply to the best of your ability the expected academic integrity as it relates to research, recognition and citing of others' prior work, and ethical treatment of your data and interpretation, discussion, and presentation of that data.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): The entirety of the academic research process will be demonstrated in each segment of your thesis as it is developing over the course of the track. You will understand the value of and be able to synthesize the findings of prior academic research as a foundation for your own empirical research. Following accepted protocols for quality research, your thesis process will reflect knowledge of methods, data presentation, and interpretation of what your data contributes to the field. You are able to draw logical conclusions. You begin to embody the researcher's perspectives on what constitutes quality research. Moreover, as academic integrity and ethical research behaviors are the core of reliable and valid research, your track experience will demonstrate a capability of meeting research standards, including proper citation and referencing of prior research, sufficient and ethical data collection, and fair and object data interpretation and conclusions.

Very Good (4): As a result of the CCM track classes, you will understand the essential academic practices as they relate to your own empirical research. You gain experience in synthesizing theoretical and empirical research to create new insights to the academic field, further advancing this knowledge through your thesis process. Your familiarity with researchers' perspective on knowledge will be demonstrated through your curiosity of cultural phenomena, following expected research processes, and writing in an appropriate academic style. Academic integrity in research, particularly in acknowledging the contributions of others' work toward your own research, is an essential skill that is mastered through your thesis process. You will demonstrate appropriate citing and referencing in proper APA form. You will take in stride that some challenges will transpire in the research process and find reasonable solutions and acknowledge limitations that all researchers confront.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): From the presentations of theory and class discussions and practices, you embrace the requirements of quality academic research and writing and demonstrate these in your track project report and thesis. A strength will be your ability to read a variety of peer-reviewed sources and synthesize the information for the benefit of your research. You contribute new insights to the research field through the process of gathering, analyzing, and interpreting empirical data, and recognizing the limitations within this research process. You develop and can demonstrate a researcher's curiosity about cultural, identity, and behavioral phenomena that exist in every aspect of your business and personal lives. Moreover, you understand and apply all aspects of academic integrity perfectly and consistently. You have internalized the APA method of citing and referencing, as well as presenting your and others' work in a clear and objective manner. Challenges and areas of difficulty in the thesis process are addressed with wisdom and insight.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

For the mid-track assignments, particularly those related to the thesis development, a pass reflects your ability to meet deadlines, to present cogent and sufficient written material, and to demonstrate sufficient academic integrity.

Materials

All learning materials are provided in class or compiled by you in the process of gaining insight into your thesis topic through the published academic literature.
