Objective

The objective of the course (objectives):
Have you thought about what kind of people are involved in the production and publishing of games? How do software development models and frameworks work for the different processes in practice? How do you combine the skills of professionals from different areas and produce something new? And what are the game production and project administration processes and pipelines like in real-life working environment with all the challenges and nuances?

Working in the game industry often takes place in teams where everyone has different skills. In this course, you will gain practical experience on game production and project administration specialty roles and responsibilities, and what it is like to work in a game production project that gets published.

Course competences:
- Learning to Learn: Student is able to acquire, critically assess and appropriately apply the national and international knowledge base and practices of their field. Also takes responsibility for group learning and sharing what has been learned.
- Operating in a Workplace: Student is able to work constructively in a work community and promotes their own and their work community’s wellbeing. - Cross-Disciplinary in Games: Student can apply skills and knowledge in a special field of game production, development or design, or other field of study with link to digital games.
- Game Production: Student can produce content for a game project and can work with the tools in meaningful and systematic way. Student can implement assets with a game engine. Student can program with an engine-specific language and understand the role of assets and/or middleware. Student can produce value for a game project while working in a specific specialist role. Student can gather and lead a game production team. Student understands business aspects, game industry and monetization and can apply them in game production.
- Software Engineering: Student is familiar with tools and methods related to software engineering and able to apply the knowledge in practical work. Student is able to define, plan, test and/or implement software products.
- Systems and Methods in ICT: Student has knowledge general information about ICT systems, software development tools and communication tools. Student understands the role of ICT tools and digitalization.

When you complete this course, you can be productive in game production and project administration related roles in a real-life production. You know how to apply agile methodology in practice to a software or a game project. You know how publish a product demo. You know how to build a personal career portfolio.

Content

The main content of the course is working in the production of a publishable game. You will learn more about the phases and life cycles of game production and publishing, as well as what should be done in each phase. You will also learn about the game production and administration processes, related specialisation roles with their responsibilities, and expertise skills needed to fill those roles. You will apply your previous knowledge and hone your skills to solve various challenges during production and publishing processes with the chosen tools. You will also deepen your skills in project administration, conceptualisation, design, prototyping, and teamwork. You will be a part of the publishing process and creation of a collaborative end result (published product).

The course will provide you with a toolkit of personal and group working related skills for succeeding in a game industry position.

Qualifications

Understanding of project management, project processes and software engineering. Completed enough core and selective studies of your own specialty field. Competence in at least one of these fields:
- Game Production - Technology related (e.g. Programming / Testing / Infrastructure / Implementation)
- Game Production - Content creation related (e.g. 2D / 3D / Audio / Design)

And know-how in at least one of the following:
- Project Administration related (e.g. Leading / Managing / Business / QA & Testing)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient (1): You know how to apply agile methodology in practice to a software or a game project. You know how publish a product demo. You know how to build a personal career portfolio. Your personal skills have developed only a small amount on the roles you have chosen. You have hard time reflecting on your know-how. You know the basic parts of the production process, and can be a part of the implementation on a limited capacity. You can be productive on a limited capacity in game production and project administration related roles in a real-life production. You can work independently on a limited role.

Satisfactory (2): You understand how to apply agile methodology in practice to a software or a game project. You know how publish a product demo. You understand how to build a personal career portfolio. Your personal skills have developed on the roles you have chosen. You can reflect on your know-how. You understand the basic parts of the production process, and can be a part of the implementation. You can be productive on a in game production and project administration related roles in a real-life production. You can work independently on a limited role.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You can apply agile methodology in practice to a software or a game project. You understand how publish a product demo. Excellent (5): You have deep understanding and skills with agile methodology in practice to a software or a game project. You can publish a product demo. You can apply your skills to how to build a personal career portfolio and analyse it. Your personal skills have developed on the roles you have chosen and you can evaluate your development. You can analytically reflect and discuss about your know-how. You understand the most parts of the production process, and can be a part of the implementation. You can solve problems in the production/project pipeline and can record them in a systematic way. You are productive and help others in several game production and project administration related roles in a real-life production. You can work independently on a role.
