Objective

Assessing the durability of structures requires knowledge of materials and mechanics. During the course you will learn about the mechanical properties of materials and the associated curves and fracture surfaces. You will also gain an understanding of statics and issues related to strength calculation.

Knowledge and understanding: you understand the basics of statics, materials and strengths.

Engineering practice: the ability to identify and understand the strengths of structures and outline mechanical calculation models and identify materials suitable for structures.

Content

Internal structure of materials, mechanical properties and the effect of internal structure on mechanical properties. Particle and rigid body statics. Stresses. Normal and shear stress. Normal stress in beam bending. Deflection. Fundamentals of torsion.

Qualifications

Equations, groups of equations. Basics of statics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The assessment consists of tasks and a test. Examinations are held three times a year in accordance with the examination regulations.

Intermediate (1): You know the mechanical properties of materials, but you have weaknesses in interpreting the associated curves and fracture surfaces. You have a fair knowledge of the principles of simple calculus in statics and strength of materials.

Satisfactory (2): You have an understanding of the mechanical properties of materials and can interpret the associated curves and fracture surfaces. You can satisfactorily calculate simple basic calculations in statics and strength of materials.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You have an understanding of the mechanical properties of materials and are able to interpret the associated curves and different failure modes. You can calculate clear basic calculations in the field of statics and strength of materials.

Very Good (4): You have a good understanding of the mechanical properties of materials and can interpret the associated curves and different failure modes. You can calculate basic calculations in statics and strength of materials and understand their relevance to the durability of structures.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

You have control over the mechanical properties of materials. You can apply your knowledge in a wide range of damage examination/analysis. You can apply basic statics and strength formulas to simple structures and understand the relevance of the results to the durability of simple structures. You will be able to develop a vision for modifications to improve the durability of simple structures.
