Objective

Purpose of the course

After completing the course, you will know the practices of the animal farm and know Finnish animal species and breeds as well as production methods. You know how to work safely in an agricultural environment and know the importance of hygiene in the primary production of food.

Competences of the course

Agricultural competence: -student know the welfare factors taking into account the production of farm animals, and you know the role of animal production in the food chain
Ethicality: -you are able to take responsibility for your own actions and its consequences and reflect on them in accordance with the principles and values of professional ethics in your field.
Sustainability: -Understanding sustainability challenges, their interdependencies, and the many perspectives of issues and problems.

Learning objective of the course

After completing the course, you will know the animal species and breeds in Finland and know how to observe and handle animals safely. You know the forms of production on the animal farm. You know the importance of hygiene for food production. You know how to use a tractor and machinery safely and economically. You know the principles of occupational health and safety and know how to apply them. You show that you able to work on an animal farm.

You identify animal species and breeds and know how to operate in day-to-day care. You know the types of animal production. You are able to operate in primary production in accordance with hygiene requirements. You show that you can perform practical exercises and show that you know how to use a tractor. You are able to work safely. You know how to promote animal welfare through your own actions.

Teaching methods

Learning is divided to contact learning on campus (intensive week and contact days on campus), mandatory webinars, independent studying and assignments on Moodle-platform and practical working on an animal farm (81h).

Your activity on contact learning and mandatory webinars will be monitored. Even still, majority on learning is going to be independent that you can schedule more freely.

Practical training and working life connections

Course includes practical working period on an animla farm.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

All exams are on Moodle-platform and you perform those before practical working following schedule that we agree together on the first contact.

The course or part of it can be completed on the basis of previous knowledge.

Student workload

Contact learning on campus around 30 hours.
Mandatory webinars around 30 hours.
Practical working period 81 hours.
Laboratory orientation 1 hour.
An independent studying and assignments 144 h.

Further information for students

This corse is evaluated on scale pass-failed. All hte assigments must be returned on time and done to an acceptable extent. If necessary, assignment(s) must be improved to acceptable level.
