Purpose of the course

Content

Supervised practical training in a working place of an occupational therapist
Written and virtual assignments related to the content of the practice as well as supervising meetings

Time and location

The course takes place at an internship site arranged by the student at a time agreed upon with the internship site.

Teaching methods

The course takes place in a professional environment of an occupational therapist, in a project, or in an internship that supports entrepreneurship. The course consists of 300 hours of work at the internship site and 105 hours of related learning tasks. During the course, a teacher supervisor from Jamk and a workplace supervisor will be assigned to the student, and regular learning discussions will be held to support the student’s learning.

Practical training and working life connections

The course work hours are completed in a professional environment, and the tasks related to the course support the development of skills needed in the workplace.

There is no exam in this course.

The course can be completed abroad if desired.

Further information for students

During the course, the student sets personal learning goals in collaboration with the supervising teacher and the workplace supervisor. The student is supported in achieving these goals by both the supervising teacher and the workplace supervisor throughout the course. At the end of the course, the achievement of the goals is assessed on a pass - fail scale. The learning tasks related to the course are also assessed on a pass - fail scale, and the student receives feedback supporting their professional development from the supervising teacher and, if possible, from the workplace supervisor.

Objectives

Purpose of the course
During the professional practice the student will get to know the goal directed rehabilitation process of occupational therapy that is based on therapeutic relationship and supports client´s participation. The main concept in occupational therapy is participation and client´s own experience of his/her participation.

Learning outcomes of the course
The student can work according to client-centred practice principles and create an interactive therapist-client relationship/partnership as a foundation for occupational therapy. The student is able to counsel clients, guardians, working group members as well as other concerned parties in order to facilitate occupation and participation. The student works in cooperation with clients, defending their right to their occupational needs. The student demonstrates that he/she values and respects individual difference, cultural beliefs and customs and understands their influence on occupation and participation.
The student uses professional and ethical judgement in the occupational therapy process. The student has analysed occupation and completed an applicable and effective synthesis on occupation.
The student gains a competence in and uses one of the assessment methods in occupational therapy and knows how to interpret its results.

Supervised practical training in a working place of an occupational therapist
Written and virtual assignments related to the content of the practice as well as supervising meetings

Evaluation criteria, pass/failed

In order to complete practical training with a passing grade a student must demonstrate that he/she is able to work in a client-centred manner and create an interactive therapist-client relationship/partnership. The student has counselled clients in order to facilitate functional ability and participation. The student has demonstrated that he/she works in cooperation with clients, defending their right to their occupational needs. The student has demonstrated that he/she respects individual differences, cultural beliefs and customs.
The student has used professional and ethical judgement in the occupational therapy process. The student has analysed occupation in a purposeful way.
The student has gained a competence in and uses one of the assessment methods in occupational therapy and has been able to read its results from the client perspective.
