Master's Degree Programme in Sustainable Energy
Key learning outcomes
The degree gives you the skills and knowledge to work in development, supervisory and managerial duties that require special expertise. You are familiar with the latest technological solutions in their field, are able to understand sustainability control methods and management. In addition, you know how to plan projects and develop new energy business. You are able to develop your own and your organization's skills. You are able to respond to rapid changes in the industry, create and analyse new operating models, and develop business and processes with due consideration given to various aspects of sustainability.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
The studies include advanced professional studies, elective studies and a thesis, or a working-life development assignment. The studies consist of courses and wider competence areas. The structure of the studies (60 credits) is as follows:
Shared master competence: Research-based Development (5 credits)
Expert core competence (50 credits):
- Energy Business Development module (20 credits): Development as a leader (5 credits), Future energy systems (5 credits), Environment, safety and resource efficiency (5 credits) Expertise in Project Planning (5 credits)
- Master’s thesis (30 credits)
Complementary competence (5 credits): As elective studies, the students will choose courses from the offering of the degree programme or from the offerings of JAMK’s other master's degree programmes or other universities of applied science.
Flexible studies
The education will be provided in the from of part-time studies. The majority of the studies take place online studying independently. However, the studies also include regular classroom teaching sessions on a monthly basis.
You can choose your alternative or elective studies from EduFutura partner institutions (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia) and international studies from European EUDRES higher education institutions. You can also choose from Finnish and foreign partner universities, such as other universities of applied sciences and universities. You can apply for accreditation of higher education studies that you have completed elsewhere.
Working life oriented learning
During the courses, cooperation with companies is utilised in the form of e.g. visiting lecturers. In your studies, you share the know-how acquired in working life with the rest of the group, making it possible to build networks within the group.
The learning tasks included in the courses you can, and are even recommended to, complete in the yours own work community. You can bring the development tasks of your work community to be planned, refined and resolved as learning tasks.

In the field of technology, the master's thesis is often a research-based working life development assignment. It makes up one-half of the credits required for the degree and provides opportunities to develop one’s own competence and further one’s personal career goals.
Career opportunities and employment
Engineers and other experts from various fields who either already work or want to work with energy-related matters participate in the education. The students’ present and especially future work duties relate to the energy business and its development, managerial work or demanding expert duties in the public or private sector. The graduate has also gained competencies to work as a project leader or as an entrepreneur in the sector.
Qualifications
This Master's degree provides general competencies for demanding supervisory tasks. The degree grants you eligibility for public posts and positions that require a Master's degree. The degree corresponds to level 7 of the European Qualification Frameworks (EQF7) and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF7) for qualifications and other learning.
Further studies
You may, after graduating, apply for postgraduate studies at universities or studies at the School of Professional Teacher Education. You can also continue your studies by applying for corresponding further education programmes in foreign higher education institutions, such as EUDRES higher education institutions. The university of applied sciences offers opportunities for competence development in various institutes, such as the open university of applied sciences, specialisation training and work-oriented continuing education.
Education planning
The degree programme has been planned in close collaboration with working life representatives. The content of the degree programme has been discussed in forums such as the energy technology advisory board. The education is developed based on continuous feedback from students who are in the working life.
