Objective

The students
• are able to recognize diversity of learners´and assess deviations in a child’s development
• understand the importance of early and special support as part of the basic tasks of early childhood education
• are familiar with the methods of special education and services related to it
• are able to support and guide a child who needs special support individually and comprehensively in day to day activities in a resource-based, multi-professional and family-oriented way
• act while recognizing their own basic values and abiding by professionally ethical principles

Content

• organization of early and special support in early childhood education as well as a transition stage to school life
• recognition of the child’s developmental deviations and disorders and the principles of providing support
• assessment and support methods for special pedagogy
• multi-professional work
• co-operation with whole family and parents

Qualifications

The students have a command of the basics of early childhood education or family work and they recognize its key operational environments and the main features of treatment, growth and development with regard to young children. The students have practical experience in early childhood education or family work, e.g from practical training.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Excellent (5) The students
- can recognize and assess deviations in a child’s development
- can give reasons for and apply the methods of special education
- can support and guide a child who needs special support and her family individually and comprehensively
- demonstrate a resource-based approach to work, an appreciation for clients upon meeting them, as well as professionally ethical principles
- have actively participated in both contact teaching and discussion in the learning environments and has completed the agreed upon assignments in given time.
The students´ assignments demonstrate innovativeness and views of the subject are comprehensive, diverse and critically justified. In their assignments the students have dealt with the subject matter according to the given instructions. The students have used diverse and relevant sources, including sources in foreign languages and has followed the JAMK reporting instructions.

Very good (4) The students
- can recognize and name deviations in a child’s development
- can apply the methods of special education
- can support and guide a child who needs special support and her family individually and comprehensively
- demonstrate a resource-based approach to work, an appreciation for clients upon meeting them, as well as professionally ethical principles
- have actively participated in both contact teaching and discussion in the learning environments and has completed the agreed assignments in given time.
