Objective

The student masters the most essential parts of data center management: concepts, structures, used technical implementations and general infrastructure. In addition, the student masters the principles of data centers and is able to design a data center based on requirement specifications taking into account restrictions.

Content

The course includes all various parts of a data center, techniques and infrastructures used generally. In addition, the course discusses various requirement levels and the best design practices for data center design.

Qualifications

Applies to degree students:

The student must have completed their professional studies of their specialization option in order to participate in the course. The knowledge is based on theory on IT management and practices, knowledge and practices of various network technologies and server operating systems as well as practical knowledge.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Excellent 5: The student masters well the theory on data center design and is able to analyze existing solutions in a versatile manner as well as design an ecological and efficient data center infrastructure in a project group based on requirement specification. The student is able to act in all roles of the project group and assess the group’s and their own learning and the project outcome, i.e. the data center design critically.

Very good 4: The student demonstrates mastery of the theory on data center design, is able to analyze existing solutions, and design a data center infrastructure based on requirement specification. The student is able to work in a project group and assess the group’s and their own work and data center design in a versatile manner.

Good 3: The student knows the main features of the theory on data center design and analysis. The student is able to design a simple data center infrastructure and document it well. The student is able to work in a project group and assess the group’s and their work and the outcome, i.e. data center design plans.

Satisfactory 2: The student knows the basics of the theory on data center design and analysis and is able to design a data structure infrastructure in outline. The student is able to work in a project group in certain roles and assess the group’s and their own work superficially.

Sufficient 1: The student is familiar with the basics of data center design theory and is able to understand simple data center design documents. The student knows the basics of project work and participates in the group’s work actively, however, not being capable of critical self-assessment

Fail 0: The student does not meet the minimum criteria set for the course.
