Key learning outcomes

The degree programme is ideal if you wish to explore ways to reduce environmental emissions from the construction sector. After you have completed your degree, you will be able to design and implement buildings in which energy consumption and issues affecting the carbon footprint have been taken into account through the whole life span of the building.

You will also learn to apply the research and development methods of working life to the development of your competences and organisation. You are able to react to rapid changes, create new operating models and manage change processes.

Education content and professional growth and know-how

The studies include advanced professional studies, elective studies and a thesis or a working life development task. The studies consist of courses and more extensive competence modules.

Your studies focus on relevant areas related to construction, BIM, environmental costs, building health and legislation, and construction instructions. You will also learn how to use modern IT applications.

Flexible studies

Students have a choice of alternative or elective studies offered by partner universities in Finland and abroad, such as other universities of applied sciences (CampusOnline), universities and educational institutions involved in the EduFutura collaboration (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia). Higher level studies completed elsewhere may be accredited as part of your degree. The student must have a certificate or some other document to prove that they have completed the studies. Skills acquired elsewhere can also be described and demonstrated to enable accreditation. Further information is available in the Study Guide.

Working life oriented learning

The lectures and tasks during the study periods use real examples from the construction industry. The thesis is aimed to respond to the needs of the customer company and to develop the company’s activities.

Career opportunities and employment

Low-carbon construction has already been set very close in the road maps of decision makers, but knowledge of it is generally limited in the construction sector. The studies give an advantage to work as an expert in different tasks. In addition, the Master's degree provides eligibility for exceptionally demanding tasks of the Ministry of the Environment in the planning and management of construction. A Master's degree also helps in finding a job.

Qualifications

A Master's degree is required in the qualification requirements for exceptionally demanding design tasks. (Ministry of the Environment guidelines on the qualifications of building designers - YM2/601/2015)

Further studies

The graduate may apply to continue on to postgraduate studies in science or arts at universities (Act 558/2009, Section 37) and in the school of professional teacher education. Studies can be continued by applying for corresponding post-degree education at universities abroad, for example. A university of applied sciences also provides opportunities for continuing education in the form of specialisation studies, open studies, an online study portal (CampusOnline) and working life based continuing education.

Education planning

The planning of the degree programme has begun based on the feedback related to the competence needs of the sector that the Civil Engineering degree received in their research and development activities. The perspectives related to the planning and development of the degree programme and the impacts of the measures taken are regularly discussed in the Advisory Board of Civil Engineering. The content of the degree aims to support the decision-makers' objectives https://ym.fi/vahahiilisen-rakentamisen-tiekartta.
