Objective

In addition to 3D modeling and making drawings, modern design software can be used more extensively in product development. You learn how to do motion analysis for mechanism and animations that illustrate a product. You learn to estimate products manufacturing costs. Your competence is growing in product manufacturing tolerances and making analysis of tolerance chains. After you have passed the course, you will be able to evaluate the environmental impact of your design during its life cycle.

Knowledge and understanding:
You are familiar with various analysis tools used in design software and able to apply them in evaluating the products, taking into account their limitations.

Engineering practice:
You have an understanding of design methods and an ability to use them. You learn to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems using taught methods. You can apply your knowledge and understanding when making analyses and select relevant analytic and modelling methods.

Multidisciplinary competences:
You are able to choose the materials and manufacturing methods for your product design, taking into account environmental considerations. You are trained to take business view into account when making choices and reflections.

Content

3D modeling methods. Creating drawings from a 3D model. Product configuration at both model and assembly levels. Motion analysis of the mechanisms. Environmental impact analysis of the product (Sustainability). Estimation of manufacturing costs. Analysis of product tolerance chains

Materials

Lecture material. Solidworks-software educational documents, user quide and tutorials.

Teaching methods

Lectures, information retrieval and applied learning assigments. Recorded lectures and examples Assignments are based on Problem-based learning. You can do assignments individually or in groups, but you must always return the assignments individually. In distance learning you can join the webinars to get help in the assignments. In the middle of the course you give anonymous feedback.

Exam schedules

No exam

Student workload

Lectures 45 h, learning assignments 65 h and independent work 25 h. Total 135 h learning work.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Assessment consists of learning assignments 100%.

Sufficient (1): You identify the basic knowledge and terminology but can only sufficiently apply them to simple planning tasks.

Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but can only satisfactorily apply them to practical design tasks.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You master the essential knowledge and skills covered by the course and you are able to apply them in machine design. You can:
- configure models and assemblies
- produce machine drawings of 3D models
- use software analysis tools to design machine parts and assemblies
- evaluate the environmental impact of the product

Very good (4): You master the essential knowledge and skills and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to machine design

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You master master the essential knowledge and skills of the course and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to demanding machine design.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Approved:
You have completed each class assignment and all exercise assignments.

Qualifications

You master the basics of machine drawings like projections, sectional views, dimensions, tolerances and other markings on the drawing. You master parametric feature modelling. You are able to make workshop- and assembly drawings based on a 3D model. You have basic knowledge of material technology and you know the different groups of materials, their properties and their most common uses in technical applications.
