Objective

You will learn the essential parts of Finnish language structure (present and past verb tenses, sentence structure, noun declension). You will be able to communicate in familiar everyday life situations, including those in the field of nursing. You will be able to describe your own home and living arrangements, your home country and your personal background. You will be introduced to the typical features of the Finnish communication culture and self-study methods.

With some assistance, you will be able to Finnish in situations of immediate relevance, including those in the field of nursing. You will be able to intelligibly describe, in simple terms, things related to your personal background, home and living arrangements. You will be able to instruct the patient and communicate in basic care or treatment scenarios, but needs help and repetition. You will be able to partly understand the main points of things said in Finnish regarding familiar and typical matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. With some assistance, you will be able to write a simple, short care instruction.

Content

You will learn to
• understand and use everyday expressions related to familiar situations, e.g. your living arrangements and personal background.

You will study
• how to instruct the patient and how to communicate in basic care or treatment scenarios,
• self directed language learning materials outside the classroom,
• language learning strategies,
• the communication culture of Finland, and
• how to describe and discuss your own home country.

You partly understand the main points of things said in Finnish regarding familiar and typical matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc. With some assistance, you write a simple, short care instruction.

2) With a bit of assistance, you use Finnish in situations of immediate relevance, including those in the field of nursing. You describe adequately well, in simple terms, things related your background, home and living arrangements. You manage to instruct the patient and communicate in basic care or treatment scenarios with the help of others. When necessary, you sometimes use coping strategies in the context of nursing. You partly understand the main points of things said in Finnish regarding familiar and typical matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc. You write a simple, short care instruction.

Qualifications

Successful completion of JAMK Finnish 2 for Nursing Students or equivalent skills.
