Objective

You will be able to use your language learning strategies and lifelong and out-of-class learning skills, and engage in everyday and work-related communication situations. You will be able to understand simple texts by developing your reading strategies. You will have an expanded vocabulary of terms related to the field of nursing and working life.

You will be able to handle routine nursing situations and the most common everyday encounters. You will also be able to use coping strategies to make yourself understood.

Content

You will learn to

communicate in everyday and nursing situations;
develop your language learning strategies;
develop your reading strategies;
actively develop your out-of-class language learning skill; and
develop your cultural knowledge, especially in the field of nursing.

You will study
how to understand and write short documents, and
how to use coping strategies to make yourself understood.

Teaching methods

The degree programme provides the textbook for the course. The textbook is Hoidetaan suomeksi.
The implementation will start at 11.1.2024 and end 20.5.2024.

Contact lessons every other week (intensive studying days) - if you are doing practical training, please inform your mentor about our Finnish course and ask the lesson dates to be day off while planning workshifts.

The workload for student:

- Contact lessons at the JAMK campus, total 48 h . See the schedule and classrooms on the calendar.
- Self-study, virtual study and assignments 87 h.

Total 135 h (one credit equals 27 hours of student work).

We will have a written and oral exam in the end of the course.

You form sentences concerning familiar subjects according to the situation. You write short, simple texts with the aid of a dictionary. Your ability to comprehend speech requires repetition and rephrasing.

3 You manage in routine nursing-related situations and everyday encounters. You communicate about familiar subjects. You perform in common nursing situations. You understand the main points of texts on familiar topics. You write short, simple texts. You understand slowed speech and ask if you don’t understand something.

4 You handle the most common social encounters and routine conversations about everyday life and nursing. You communicate about familiar subjects. You use the key terminology related to everyday work situations to instruct the patient orally and in writing in common nursing scenarios. You understand the main points of texts concerning everyday life and the most common nursing subjects. You write short, simple texts. You understand the main points of general speech.
