Objective

It is essential for the design engineer to understand the importance of manufacturing and economic aspects in product design. You learn to understand the progress of the design process and you are able to choose the appropriate materials for structures. Your competence is growing in to be able to standards as design support. After you have passed the course, you will be able to design simple structures and the related machine components considering safety factors.

Engineering practice:
You have an understanding of design methodologies and an ability to use them. You understand the meaning of standardization in product design and manufacturing. You can take into consideration the whole product life cycle in design. You know the requirements of machine directives pertaining to design and can design equipment and structures that are safe and easy to use.

Multidisciplinary competences:
You are able to apply your knowledge and understanding to develop and realize designs of products and structures to meet defined and specified requirements. You have the ability to look for customer-friendly, sustainable and economically-viable solutions in designing products and structures.

Communication and team-working:
You are able to work independently in communication situations at work. You have also an ability to function effectively as a member of a team and you understand the meaning of team work in product design.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Assessment consists of exam 50% and learning assignments 50%.

Sufficient (1): You identify the basic knowledge and terminology but can only sufficiently apply them to simple practical design tasks.

Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but can only satisfactorily apply them to practical design tasks.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You master the essential knowledge and skills and can apply them to practical design tasks:
- can describe the progress of a design project
- can choose appropriate materials for the structures
- can describe the significance of manufacturing technology, economy, standards and safety in product designing.

Very good (4): You master the essential knowledge and skills and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to practical design tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You master master the essential knowledge and skills of the course and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to demanding practical design tasks.

Qualifications

You have the basic knowledge of the strength of materials and you are able to calculate static structures. You know the most common machine elements and their dimensioning and selection. You have the basic knowledge of material technology and they know different material groups, their properties and the most common uses in technical applications. You are able to make workshop- and assembly drawings and you master the 3D modelling and making workshop drawings from a 3D model.

Further information

On the learning assignments there is continuous developing feedback, student self-evaluations and group evaluations.
