Objective
The purpose of the course
You will learn the basics of electromagnetism which is required to understand different electricity related applications like electric engine and electric generator. In addition, you will learn logical problem solving.
Eur-ACE competences
EA-KW: You obtain the basic knowledge of electromagnetism for the field of engineering.
EA-MC: You are able to apply the physical problem solving strategies in other fields of interest.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you are able to identify the basic principles of electromagnetism and solve simple electromagnetism related problems.
Content
The course consists of the following themes
The structure of matter, Coulomb law, electric field, electric potential energy, voltage, electrical conduction, conducting materials, insulating materials, semiconductors, magnetic field, magnetic forces, electric motor, magnetic materials, induction, Lenz law and electric generators.
Location and time
The course is implemented on 4th March 2024 - 26th April 2024.
Oppimateriaali ja suositeltava kirjallisuus
The lecture slides and exercises are provided by the teacher.
The course material is based on the following books:
1.) Young, Hugh D.; Freedman, Roger A. University Physics with Modern Physics. International edition.
2.) Knight, Randal D. Physics for Scientists and Engineers. Pearson International edition.
All editions are suitable for this course.
Teaching methods
The course covers lectures in the classroom and home exercises.
Exam schedules
The course exam dates and deadlines for home exercises are announced in the first lecture. You are allowed to do the renewal exam two times during the semester.
Vaihtoehtoiset suoritustavat
The approval procedures are described in the degree regulations and the study guide. The teacher of the course provides additional information about possible alternative course completion procedures.
Student workload
One credit corresponds to a workload of 27 hours. In total, the course requires 108 hours of work.
Further information
The evaluation takes into account the scores in the exam. At the beginning of the course, the teacher provides assignments to collect additional scores. At least 50 % of the maximum scores is required to pass.
If you are prevented from attending the first contact lesson of the course, the course teacher must be notified of the participation in the course.
