Objective

The objective of the course
Management and development of supply chains and logistics processes demands the utilization of data collection and processing of data. As a logistics professional you need to understand how data can be gathered automatically and analyzed with information systems. In this course you’ll also learn how these technologies create competitive advantage. After this course you know the most common automatic data gathering methods in logistics, understand how they work and how companies benefit from them. You know what kind of information systems companies utilize and understand how they can bring competitive advantage. You can also conduct a research and present the findings in a compact manner.

Technology and Knowledge and understanding: You can describe the working methods of automatic data gathering technologies utilized especially in logistics and can compare RFID and bar code systems through their strengths and weaknesses. You know how positioning systems work and are utilized for logistics processes. You understand what Intelligent transport systems is and how it affects road transport. You can describe how the most common information systems are utilized and what kind of benefits and competitive advantage they can bring.

Investigation and information retrieval: You can form a research question related to the scope of the course, conduct a comprehensive research within given time frame and present the findings in a compact manner.

Communication and team work: You can give constructive feedback to others and can take part in a conversation.

Teaching methods

Course contains lectures (approximately 30 h), lab exercises and group assignments.

Students enrolled in the course will be removed from the implementation three weeks after the start of the course if they have not completed the assignment announced at the beginning of the course.

Student workload

One credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work, which means that the load of five credits is approximately 135 hours. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the course implementation.

You know the basics of technologies that are utilized in logistics processes to gather data automatically. You can describe the basic functions and benefits of these systems and name a few information systems. You can conduct an research individually or as a member of a group and present the findings. You can give feedback to students and take part in conversations.
