Content scheduling

The course is divided into three parts per semester as follows (teacher in charge of the section in parentheses):

- Basics of Building Engineering 5 ECTS, autumn -24 (Viinikainen Marko)
- Structural fire safety 3 ECTS, spring -24 (Lähdesmäki Pekka)
- Occupational safety 1 cr, spring -24, (Koskenkorva Janne)

Objective

Purpose of the course:
The knowledge and skills in this course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills you need for further study in civil engineering. The knowledge and skills you will need in this course will enable you to design and implement building projects, taking into account fire safety and operational safety.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding of: suitable materials, equipment, tools.
Communication and teamwork: ability to work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
Interdisciplinary competences: ability to assess and develop skills and learning styles in different learning environments.
Practical application of technology: Ability to apply technical standards and established guidelines for professional practice in one's field.

Course objective:
You will be able to explain the main principles of building legislation. You will know the parties involved in a construction project and be able to describe the main stages of the construction process. You will know the main building materials used in the construction process. Know the structural options for a typical building project, both on-site and prefabricated, and be able to show them on a drawing. Know the nomenclature of houses and the most common types of construction machinery. Knowledge of the most relevant safety issues in the construction industry.
Knowledge of the main legislation, regulations and guidelines on structural fire and operational safety and their application in new and renovation projects. You know the main factors affecting fire safety on construction sites. These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Content

Building legislation, construction methods and parties involved, description of the construction process, building materials, conventional structures such as a detached house.

On-site construction, prefabricated construction, identification of construction machinery.

Fire progression, fire and operational safety legislation, regulations and guidelines.

Location and time

Contact lessons according to Time Table.

Materials

Up-to-date legislation and guidelines in the field, such as: Land Use and Building Act, building regulations, RIL, Ratu, RYL, RT card list.

Teaching methods

On this course will be used following teaching methods:
