Objectives
The basic knowledge of the strength of materials is essential to constructions engineering. The strength can only be determined by stress. To determine the stress you have to be able to calculate the stresses from loads and for that you need statics. You gain the basics knowledge of statics and you can do static sizing of simple structures with the help of manuals and sizing table cases. You can form a mechanical model from a structure under inspection and you can solve the forces and stresses, affecting it. You can perceive cases which require more precise and profound static inspection. You start the studies from the basic concept and proceed to apply them to more challenging calculations of statics.
Knowledge and Understanding:
You understand the principles of statics and how they are based to the mathematics and physics.
Engineering Practice:
You can apply the principles of statics to solve practical engineering problems by using the standardized calculation methods.
Multidisciplinary competences:
You understand the effect of the statics to the calculations of structures and its effect to environmental and economic issues. You can also gather and interpret relevant information for the calculation of statics.
Content
Balance of particles and rigid bodies. Grids, beam structures and link mechanisms. Stresses.

Teaching methods
Recorded lectures and calculation examples. Assignments are based by problem-based learning. As help when you do your assignments you can use recorded lectures, examples, discussion list and files in your studying environment. You can do assignments individually or in groups, but you must always return the assignments individually. In distance learning you can join the webinars to get help in the assignments. In contact method you can get help for the assignments in the workshops.
You must be present at the first lecture (either remotely or face-to-face), and the first assignments must be submitted on time. If the above is not realized, the student will be removed from the course. In the middle of the course, you give anonymous feedback.
Exam dates and retake possibilities
exam week 49 and two resits
In full time studies, exams and retakes in JAMK's premises. In part time studies as a supervised video exam.
Student workload
Recorded lectures and examples 20 h, learning assignments 18 h either online or by distance learning in study environment and independent learning work 70 h. Total 108 h learning work.

Evaluation scale
0-5
Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
To gaine the grade 0-5 you have to take part to the exam. In the course there is exam and two resits.
Adequate (1): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology of statics but in creating mechanical models your skills are clearly inadequate. You can solve simple basic problems in an adequate manner.
Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology of statics but in creating mechanical models from real structures your skills are inadequate. You can satisfactorily solve simple basic problems.
Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)
Good (3): You are familiar with the knowledge of statics and calculating forces and stresses in simple structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired to simple structures to solve forces and stresses. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound static inspection.
Very good (4): You are familiar with the knowledge of statics and calculating forces and stresses in structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired to simple structures to solve forces and stresses. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound static inspection
Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You are familiar with the knowledge of statics and calculating forces and stresses in structures and you can apply the knowledge acquired in an innovative manner to more challenging structures to solve forces and stresses. You also understand those situations which require more precise and profound static inspection.
Evaluation criteria, pass/failed
Approved: You must calculate at least 75% of homework and you must get answers which are relatively correct from each week. You must get correct answer for at least 50% of the homework from each week.
