Objectives

In design and product development tasks, a mechanical engineer must be able to design products following the design process as part of a larger design team. You learn to apply in practice the subjects taught especially in professional engineering studies. Your competence is growing in the work methods of the industry, as well as the typical tasks of a product development or design engineer.

Engineering practice:
You have an understanding of design methodologies and an ability to use them. You learn to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems using taught methods. You can apply your knowledge and understanding when making analyses and select relevant analytic and modelling methods.

Multidisciplinary competences:
You are able to apply your knowledge and understanding to develop and realize designs of products and structures to meet defined and specified requirements. You are trained to take business view into account when making choices and reflections.

Communication and team-working:
You learn to communicate both orally and in writing by attending seminar presentations and preparing a project report. You learn teamwork skills and are able to consider different kind of persons in the team.

Content

You apply to practice the things learnt in the module and deepen their competence in a chosen subject. Design process. Design for manufacture and assembly. Standardization. Machine safety. Product costs.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Project work instructions.

Teaching methods

Teamwork on a topic assigned by a client company or the lecturer, according to project management principles.

The responsible and transparent use of AI applications is encouraged in this course. Instructions for using artificial intelligence can be found in chapter 3.2 of the thesis reporting instructions. If necessary, the instructions for each learning assignment contain more detailed information on how to use it in more detail in this course.

Practical training and working life connections

The subjects of the projects mainly come from companies and the work can be related to the company's ongoing product development project.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

No exam

International connections

If there is international students in the course, it will be organized in English.

Student workload

Guidance on assignment 40 h teamwork 149 h Total 189 h learning work.

Further information for students

On the learning assignments there is continuous developing feedback. The overall assessment consists of 100% of the group project work.

Those registered for the course will be removed from the implementation if they have not completed the task announced at the beginning.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Assessment consists of project work 100% and compulsory seminar presentation.

Sufficient (1): You have lacks in project´s complete implementation, the project has time table problem nor in implementation there has not been utilized knowledge given in other courses. Problem solving is simple and research work is very narrow. You reach only partly the goals which satisfied the client company. The report has not been written according to JAMK´s bachelor thesis report instructions. Your role in seminar presentation is humble.

Satisfactory (2): You have slight lacks in project´s complete implementation, the project has little time table problem nor in implementation there has not been noticeable utilized knowledge given in other courses. Problem solving is simple and research work is narrow. You reach only partly the goals which satisfied the client company. The report has not been wholly written according to JAMK´s bachelor thesis report instructions. Your role in seminar presentation is humble.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

Good (3): You handles moderate demanding project´s implementation, the project has no time table problem and in implementation there has been utilized some knowledge given in other courses. Problem solving and research work are versatile. You reach mainly the goals specified by the client company. The report has been written according to JAMK´s bachelor thesis report instructions. Your role in seminar presentation is active.

Very good (4): You manage a demanding project, it progresses on schedule and you apply the skills what you have learned to practice successfully. The project has made extensive use of information obtained from other courses and the search for information has been extensive. The client company is very satisfied with the results. The report has been written in accordance with the JAMK´s bachelor thesis report instructions. Your role in seminar presentation is active

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): The problem of project work is specifically demanding and the implementation is very successful from which the client company´s representative is also agreed. From project you can identify features on innovation. During the project you utilize widely knowledge and understanding of other courses. The report has been written in accordance with the JAMK´s bachelor thesis report instructions. Your role in seminar presentation is significant
