Objective
The object of the course
Do you want to deepen your knowledge and skills in creating 2D graphics for a game? The course lets you in on how to improve on your skills when creating assets for advanced games utilizing 2D graphics.
After completing this course, you will be prepared to work as 2D artist in any game development project. You will be further introduced to most important tools and techniques for 2D graphic creation.
Course competences
Systems and methods in ICT
Game production competence
The learning objectives of the course
The student who completes the course is able to produce more complex graphical assets for a 2D game using his or her own designs, as well design UI elements and produce background assets. The student understands principles of visual design as a part of game development and design.
The student learns further techniques, tools and methods for producing assets. The student is able to work in game development team to design and produce technically valid assets.
Content
In the course you will be introduced to advanced software and hardware tools, technical requirements and workflow for creating 2D and UI assets in a game development project.
Teaching methods
This course focuses on using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, with a strong emphasis on examples from 2D games. Students will learn to effectively utilize reference materials in their own work and gain a solid understanding of the theory behind visual observation and design. The course covers a wide range of techniques that students can apply to their visual projects. Additionally, it explores the intersection of analog and digital workflows, particularly in the creation and use of textures.
Assessment is based on the student's personal development, demonstrated through course assignments, which can also be included in their professional portfolio. There is no exam for this course.
Vaihtoehtoiset suoritustavat
You have the right to apply for recognition of your studies if you have prior learning (e.g. university studies completed elsewhere) that can be accredited towards the degree you are currently completing.
The recognition of prior learning is possible in three primary ways: accreditation (replacement or inclusion), recognition of informal learning and studification. More precise info: JAMK Degree Regulations, section 17.
Student workload
One credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work, which means that the load of five credits is approximately 135 hours. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the course implementation.
Evaluation scale
0-5
Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1-2)
Sufficient (1): You understand the importance of 2D asset creation and technical requirements. You can work in a game development project to produce and design technically valid assets.
Satisfactory (2): You have knowledge in the 2D asset creation and technical requirements. You understand different tools and techniques. You can work in a game development project and design and produce technically valid assets for different purposes.
Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3-4)
Good (3): You can make design decisions with 2D asset creation and technical requirements. You know how to use tools and techniques. You can work in a game development project and design and produce assets for different purposes based on your own design decisions.
Very good (4): You understand working methods, tools and technical requirements of 2D asset creation well. You know how to pick the most effective tools and methods for the task at hand. You can work in a game development project and design and produce assets for different purposes, as well as direct other team members in the process.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You can analytically discuss about the working methods, tools and technical requirements in game development and 2D asset production. You can question the presented information and give valid options. You can evaluate the processes and improve on working methods and technical details. You can find novel methods and solutions for asset production when working in a game development project.
Qualifications
Basics for Digital Media and Basics of 2D Game Art courses (or similar) are required to be finished to attend this course. If you have not passed these courses, you need to provide sufficient evidence about the skills required.
