Objective

The applied track project aims to develop your research skills by undertaking a real-life research project in connection with your academic track, in which you collect and analyze data and report research results, either individually or in groups. Your academic track teacher automatically becomes the tutor teacher of your applied track project.

Applied business skills (IBBUS): You are able to solve real-life business problems by applying disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, collecting and analyzing data and making informed decisions based on the analysis.

Communication skills (IBCOM) and Ethical Conduct (IBETH): You are able to present your findings responsibly both orally and in a written report.

Content

Contents of projects are determined according to the contents of your selected academic track.

Location and time

Although this is typically part of the CCM Track, in the autumn 2024, the goal is to have it as a separate time period so that it will work in parallel to the track. This will allow the students to being work immediately on their thesis in the track.

Teaching methods

The applied track project in the Cross-Cultural Managment track involves learning how to facilitate cultural learning activities. Through lecture and practice, you will learn how to facilitate such activities--starting with understanding the clients' needs and planning the event, through engaging learners in the planned activity, to the post-activity evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the facilitation to improve learning. Thus, planning, implementation, and reflective evaluation are key learning methods. This process is typically done in pairs or triads.

In the business world, it is likely that professionals will need to understand how to prepare for an activity aimed at developing knowledge or practices. The focus on facilitating learning activities is just one opportunity; other uses for the information can be applied depending on your future profession.

Exam schedules

There are no exams. Actual appointments (a group project) with (typically) external audiences to facilitate learning activities, successfully administering the planned facilitation, and your reflection on your learning through these experiences will be one basis for the final grade. You and your team mates also will conduct self- and peer-evaluations on how the members engaged and managed during the full faciliation process.

You have the right to apply for recognition of your studies if you have prior learning (e.g. university studies completed elsewhere) that can be accredited towards the degree you are currently completing.

The recognition of prior learning is possible in three primary ways: accreditation (replacement or inclusion), recognition of informal learning and studification. More precise info: JAMK Degree Regulations, Section 17.

Student workload

The 5 ECT course (135 hours) breaks down into about
45 hours classroom instruction
25 hours of planning one or more faciliation activities
10 hours excecuting the faciliations
20 hours in post-activity group evaluations, with generating knowledge for future implementations
35 hours in self-reflection and writing, with support of the academic literature, the final reflective report, as well as the self- and peer-evaluation materials

Further information

This course will help you develop within the Jamk International Business competence: Operating in a workplace. As a result of the planning, implementing, and evaluating the learning activity being facilited, you will be developing skills that may become useful in many business applications. The competence Learning to Learn also will be tapped on as you, as you move through the process, will develop new knowledge that can draw on current knowledge, experiences, and reflective learning both for the current process and in the future employment.

You will be assessed on your course-ending reflection paper and both self- and peer-evaluation.

Sufficient (1): You fail to show a convincing ability to apply data into solving real-life business issues. There is an attempt to create an analysis but based on it, the objectives and value remain unclear in the report and the presentation. Communication is understandable but with mistakes, and there are deficiencies in following JAMK reporting instructions. Ethical conduct is properly carried out.

Satisfactory (2): You show a basic ability to apply data to solving real-life business issues. A reasonably clear analysis has been created in the report and the presentation. Communication is understandable, and there are some deficiencies in following JAMK reporting instructions. Ethical conduct is properly carried out.

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3-4)

Good (3): You show adequate but general ability to apply data into solving real-life business issues. A relatively clear analysis has been created in the report and the presentation. Communication follows a logical structure and adheres to JAMK reporting instructions. Ethical conduct is properly carried out.

Very good (4): You show competent ability to apply data into solving real-life business issues. The ideas are worth implementing, and an explicit analysis has been created in the report and the presentation. Communication is well-structured. It follows JAMK reporting instructions, and ethical conduct is properly carried out.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You show an advanced ability to apply empirical data into solving real-life business issues. The ideas have significant value for implementation, and an explicit and focused analysis, in which the objectives are clear and set correctly regarding the problem, has been created in the report and the presentation. Communication is perfect in structure and style according to JAMK reporting instructions, and ethical conduct is properly carried out.

Qualifications

You should have participated in the academic track of the IB bachelor's degree programme where you will also do the applied track project.

There is no single lecturer in charge. Every track lecturer is responsible for the applied track projects of their track students.
