Objective

Purpose of the course:

The aim of the course is to learn how to use basic medical knowledge in social and health care client work and to learn essential first aid skills.

Course competences:

Ethical competences (Common to all)
Assessment of rehabilitation needs and opportunities (Degree program of Rehabilitation Counsellor).
Professional and inter-professional activities in physiotherapy (Degree program of Physiotherapy)
Theoretical expertise in rehabilitation and occupational therapy (Degree program of Occupational therapy)

Course objective:

You will understand the potential medical challenges faced by rehabilitation patients in the rehabilitation process, which affect the rehabilitant's ability to work and function, overall condition and rehabilitation potential. You can identify and understand the most common medical terminology. You outline and understand the medical entity. You will master essential first aid skills.

Content

The main contents of the course are the basics of biomedicine and clinical medicine and the basic terminology of medicine. It also includes the role of the physician in assessment of functioning and interprofessional collaboration. It will also cover the etiology, treatment and rehabilitation needs of the most common diagnoses requiring rehabilitation, such as cerebrovascular disorders, mental disorders, and musculoskeletal disorders. The impact of changes in health and functioning over the life course, such as congenital diseases and injuries, illness during life and multimorbidity, on an individual's functioning and rehabilitation needs will also be examined.

The course will also include basic pathophysiology and first aid skills for physiotherapy and occupational therapy students.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You will be able to identify potential medical challenges faced by the rehabilitation process that affect the rehabilitant's ability to work and function, their overall situation and their chances of rehabilitation. You will be able to define the most common medical concepts and the medical system as a whole. You will master basic first aid skills.
