Family Guidance in Child Welfare (3 cr)

Objective

After completing the course, you will recognize the issues in family life. You will have a comprehensive understanding of family counselling both from the early support and from the child welfare perspectives. You will be able to structure the family counselling process, evaluate the support needs of families and think
in a child-centred way. Additionally, you will recognize the resources of families and are able to strengthen the activeness and
participation of the family members.
 




 

Content

The contents of the course include the concept of family and issues in family life. Additionally, the course explores forms and process of family work. The course focuses on guidance and
assessment methods that strengthen the participation of families.

Teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods used in the course include webinars, independent article analysis, independent work and media monitoring assignment and reporting in pairs as teaching and learning methods.

The webinars are interactive learning situations and you will be prepared for them according to the instructions given in advance. To participate in webinars, you need a working camera, headphones and a microphone.

Completion alternatives

You can apply for admission with previous equivalent higher education studies (content/objectives/extent), or with at least one year (12 months) of work experience in family work that is relevant to the content and objectives of the course. Discuss your competences with your tutor and, if necessary, submit an eApplication form at least two weeks before the start of the course.

Qualifications

You are familiar with the Finnish social welfare system (specially child protection) and support services for families. You can perceives the connection between social factors and human everyday life and you are familiar preventive child welfare work.
 

Further information

The course will be assessed on the basis of article analysis (0-5) and media monitoring and its written reporting (0-5). The media monitoring assignment includes a personal self-assessment of the student based on the learning objectives of the course. The assignment will also include optional peer feedback. The numerical grade for the course will be based on the average of the grades for the article analysis and the media monitoring assignment.
