Objective

Learning outcome:
You know the principles of companies' environmental management and familiarise yourself with the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You deepen your knowledge of environmental legislation and the EU Emissions Trading System. You are familiar with the areas, indicators and business models of circular economy. You know the principles of companies' water-responsible operations and understand the impacts of global water risks on Finland. You know the principles of carbon footprint calculation and good practices for offsetting climate emissions.

Multidisciplinary competence:
You understand ecological, economic and social perspectives related to the field of technology. You are able to follow the development of science and technology in your own field of specialisation and collect and interpret essential information related to your learning assignments.

Knowledge and understanding:
You know the requirements of environmental legislation and responsibility reporting related to your field of specialization. You understand the importance of circular economy and water responsibility in your field of specialization. You know how a company's carbon footprint is calculated and understand how the calculation result can be utilized in your own field of specialization.

Research and information retrieval:
You are able to search for and utilize scientific research data and are able to critically evaluate information sources in your own field.

Content

Environmental management systems, ESG reporting, environmental legislation, EU ETS, circular economy and resource efficiency, responsible use of water, carbon footprint calculation and offsetting climate emissions.

Location and time

Main campus in Rajakatu.

Materials are available in the moodle.

Teaching methods

Lessons, group works, learning assignments and independent study.

Exam schedules

There is no exam on the course. The assessment is based on scoring learning assignments.

Student workload

Lessons 25 hours. Group works, learning assignments and independent study 110 hours.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient (1): You recognize the principles of companies' environmental management as well as the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You are familiar with environmental legislation and the EU Emissions Trading System. You know the areas, indicators and business models of the circular economy. You are able to describe the principles of companies' water-responsible operations and understand the impacts of global water risks on Finland. You are able to explain the principles of carbon footprint calculation and good practices in climate emission compensation.

Satisfactory (2): You are able to describe the principles of companies' environmental management as well as the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You are able to give examples of environmental legislation and the EU Emissions Trading System. You are able to describe the areas, indicators and business models of circular economy. You understand the principles of water-responsible operations of companies and the effects of global water risks on Finland. You understand the principles of carbon footprint calculation and good practices for offsetting climate emissions.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You are able to present the principles of corporate environmental management as well as the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You have a good understanding of environmental legislation and the EU Emissions Trading System. You are able to apply the principles of circular economy, resource efficiency and water-responsible operations in practice and understand the effects of global water risks on Finland. You are able to utilise carbon footprint calculation and good practices in offsetting emissions.

Commendable (4): You are able to illustrate the principles of environmental management and the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You are able to structure environmental legislation and the EU Emissions Trading System. You are able to analyse and illustrate the principles of circular economy, resource efficiency and water-responsible operations and the effects of global water risks on Finland. You are able to apply carbon footprint calculation and good practices in offsetting emissions in practice.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You are able to excellently illustrate the principles of corporate environmental management as well as the requirements of environmental management systems and responsibility reporting (ESG reporting). You are able to summarise environmental legislation and the EU emissions trading system. You are able to evaluate circular economy areas, indicators and business models. You are able to critically assess companies' water responsibility and the impacts of global water risks on Finland. You are able to draw conclusions and summaries about carbon footprint calculation and good practices in offsetting emissions.
