Tavoitteet

You will learn the essential parts of the Finnish language structure (verb tenses, sentence structure, noun declination). You can communicate in familiar everyday life situations (e.g. shopping, offices). You can describe your own area of studies and tell about your home country and background. You will be introduced to the typical features of the Finnish communication culture and education system as well as self-study methods.

You can understand simplified conversation concerning topics of personal importance. You can open and close a brief dialogue. Pronunciation is comprehensible. You can retrieve information from simple texts with the help of a dictionary. You can write a simple formal style description of your own life. You are aware of the differences between formal and informal language registers.

Sisältö

You will learn to
understand and use everyday expressions in familiar situations, e.g. shopping
describe your background and career
describe and discus about your own home country.

You will study
reading and listening comprehension
self-oriented language learning outside the classroom
language learning strategies
communication culture in Finland.

Opetusmenetelmät

Due to covid-19 situation we have limited capacity of persons in Rajakatu classrooms. Unfortunately there is not enough big classrooms for all courses. In the classroom for this course the capacity is 19 persons (18 students + teacher). That’s why I need to split the group in two. This arrangement applies at least at the end of October. When the enrolling time has ended, I will inform if we need this split.

Also, please note this course is contact learning course, so it can’t be studied in remote or online. This means there will not be any lecture recordings – if you are absent, please catch up by reading Moodle and asking your classmates what we did.

According to JAMK’s covid guidelines campuses may only be entered when healthy, with no symptoms of illness (even if the corona test has given a negative test result). If student has symptoms of illness, teacher can ask they leave. Also, JAMK recommends everyone to use a face mask and take care of good hand hygiene and safe distance (1–2 meter) and everyone to install the Koronavilkku app.

Changes to this are possible, if the covid situation changes.

2 You understand conversations on familiar topics when simple, standard Finnish with a typical vocabulary is used. You can, to some extent, participate in a discussion concerning topics of personal importance. You can retrieve information from relatively simple texts with the help of a dictionary. You can write a formal style description of your own life. You recognise the differences between formal and informal language registers. 

Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3)

3 You understand discussions on familiar topics when standard Finnish and ordinary vocabulary are used. You can take part in conversations on familiar topics of personal importance. You can understand simple texts with the help of a dictionary. You can write a brief description of a topic related to your own life. You recognise the differences between formal and informal language registers.

4 You understand the main parts of standard, spoken Finnish dealing with recurrent themes related to school, work or free time. You can find out the key topics, for example, in the news. You can cope with informal discussions in general everyday situations. You can understand brief texts on familiar topics by using a dictionary. You can write an understandable text on a topic of personal interest. You understand the differences between formal and informal language registers.

Arviointikriteerit, kiitettävä (5)

5 You understand standard, spoken Finnish on recurrent themes related to school, work and free time. You can find out key issues, for example, in the news. You can cope with informal discussions in general everyday situations. You can understand brief texts on familiar topics, and you are able to write a fluent and understandable text on a topic of personal interest. You understand the differences between formal and informal language registers.
