Content scheduling

Guided, self-paced virtual learning materials will be released weekly via Moodle. An optional Zoom teaching session will be held once a week throughout the course. For those unable to attend the optional Zoom sessions, a recorded video of each session will be uploaded to Moodle weekly.

Objective

Learning outcomes A student who has completed this course or has acquired equal knowledge will be able to - manage in basic oral everyday situations/ use the elementary structures of the language in basic everyday situations - master the Mandarin Pinyin transliteration system and the fundamentals of the Chinese writing system - recognize the basic cultural specificities of the Chinese speaking countries - recognize the cultural and language diversity and language - plan his/her future language studies.

Methods of completion

Welcome to start learning the Chinese language! You will learn to introduce yourself, to describe your studies, your work and your hobbies. You will get information about the country and its culture, for you to feel more comfortable when traveling, meeting Chinese people, and going to a tea house or cafe.

Content

Content • Pronunciation & intonation of Mandarin Pinyin • Basic structures of the Language • Basic structures and the most common characters of the Chinese writing system • Small talk -situations • Introducing and telling the name, nationality, language skills, etc. • Ordering in a teahouse, cafe or a bar • Getting information about the country and the culture

Materials

All necessary learning materials will be provided and released on Moodle. Hai Guo & YLE: BBC Real Chinese (lesson 1-4) Gu Feng: Mandarin Teaching Toolbox, Volume 1, Confucius Institute at BCIT Wu Zhongwei: Contemporary Chinese, Sinolingua Hai Guo: Multimedia English materials based on “Matka Kiinan kieleen ja kulttuuriin”

Teaching methods

Starting level: 0 (No prerequisites) Target level: A1 Virtual, Instructed In addition to the virtual materials in Moodle, an optional Zoom online meeting will be held once a week at 8:00-9:00 o'clock on Thursdays throughout the course For those who cannot attend the optional Zoom sessions, a recorded video of each session will be released weekly to guide your self-paced learning.

Chinese work environment and culture will be introduced through cultural information and videos.

Exam schedules

There is no traditional exam. Two holistic assignments (one oral and one written) will be released in Moodle at the beginning of the last week of the course.
