Content scheduling

The course does not have a scheduled timetable. It is an independently completed Moodle online course in which the student progresses module by module at their own pace. The course will close on 31 Dec 2026.

Objective

The course is designed as an introduction to pedagogical thinking and instrumental teaching, serving as a continuation of the course unit 1. The student is familiar with the basic principles of ethical conduct for teachers. They take into account the diversity of learning processes among different learners in their activities. The student is aware of the significance of emotional skills in teaching and learning.

The course is designed as an introduction to pedagogical thinking and instrumental teaching. This course serves as continuation of the course unit 1. Who is the course intended for? • The course can be completed through the Open University of Applied Sciences by any musician, music pedagogue, upper secondary student or music enthusiast interested in the subject. Content: teacher ethics, emotional skills in teaching, diversity in teaching and learning.

Location and time

Online course. Independent completion in Moodle. The course is open from 12 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. The course is divided into modules, which are recommended to be completed in numerical order, as some assignments require competencies acquired in previous modules. All modules include assignments.

Teaching methods

The course is an introduction to instrument pedagogical thinking and teaching an instrument. No prior pedagogical expertise is required, but some modules require professional or several years’ experience in playing an instrument or singing. The course is completed independently. It is recommended to complete the preceding course, Insights into Instrumental Music Teaching 1, before starting this course. For whom is the course intended? • Anyone interested in the subject—musician, music pedagogue, upper secondary student or music enthusiast—can complete the course via the open university of applied sciences. • In this course, students complete the joint lectures included in the spring pedagogical studies of the first year of the Metropolia Music degree programme for the main subjects of instrument and voice.

Exam schedules

This course is open from 12 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. Assessment takes place in the spring semester in May, and in the autumn semester in December.

The course module has no international connections, as it is implemented entirely on Moodle as an independently completed online course.

Scope and workload of the course unit: This course unit corresponds to 2 ECTS credits. ECTS credits reflect the student’s workload. Completing one ECTS credit equates to approximately 27 hours of student effort, thus a 2 ECTS credit course unit constitutes an estimated total of 54 hours of study.

Qualifications

Previous pedagogical competence is not required, but professional or several years of experience in playing an instrument or singing is a prerequisite for some modules.
