Objective

Purpose of the course:
The knowledge and skills you will need in this course will enable you to identify the sources of moisture in buildings, understand the mechanisms of moisture transfer, perform moisture engineering calculations under steady-state conditions, determine the thermal transmittance of different structures and understand the basic principles of sound insulation in structures.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of building physics at the level necessary to achieve the other learning outcomes of the programme
Communication and teamwork: ability to work effectively as an individual and as a team member
Interdisciplinary competence: Ability to identify and engage in the need for independent lifelong learning. Ability to recognise and recognise individual responsibility for learning, including the ability to take responsibility for group learning and sharing of learning.
Practical application of technology: Ability to analyse complex technical products and correctly interpret the results of such analyses, with the ability to select and have the practical skills to apply well-established analytical, computational techniques and methods appropriate to the situation.

Course objective:
You will be able to explain the most important regulations and guidelines concerning temperature and humidity in structures and to determine the thermal transmittance of different structures. You will know and identify the sources of moisture in buildings and the mechanisms of moisture transfer, you will be able to perform thermal and moisture calculations of flat structures under standard conditions, you will know the main principles of drying and dehumidification of structures. You know the main factors affecting the energy efficiency of buildings. You know the regulations and guidelines on structural sound insulation and how to apply them. These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Exam schedules

Timing of Exams and re-Exams will be agreed on the first contact lesson of the course.
The course entrance task must be taken within three ( 3 ) weeks of the course start date in order to maintain the right to study.

Completion alternatives

Certification or accreditation is possible as described in the Jamkin Peppi guidelines.

Student workload

One credit point means an average of 27 hours of work. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the way the course is implemented.
-------------------
In this study period, time use and workload is distributed as follows:

- Lectures 18 h
- Independent Work 117 h.
( including among others: Learning assignments, Home Works, preparing for Test)
- Total 135 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the course objectives and is able to perform the tasks according to the course objectives: indoor air, humidity management, determination of the coefficient of thermal transmittance, thermal and humidity analyses under standard conditions.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the issues described in the learning outcomes of the course. The student can demonstrate competence by describing the topics covered in the course in a systematic way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. The student is able to articulate the learning in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.

Excellent (4). The student is able to describe the effects of different solutions and to make informed choices between alternatives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course with excellent results. In addition, the student is able to examine the topics of the course theoretically and apply them critically in practice. Competence is demonstrated in a coherent and multidimensional manner.
