Objective
Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students are competent in managing the safe construction of steel structures. They know how to organise the installation of steel components and the construction of temporary support structures, also attending to occupational safety issues.
Competence in structural engineering
Students know the various types of steel and their uses, and know how to determine the design strengths of steel. They know the more common steel profiles (rolled and welded), and cross section classifications and how they are determined. Students know how to design simple beams and columns in case of flexural buckling. Students understand stability cases (buckling, lateral buckling of beams and buckling of plates) and take them into consideration in structural design. They also know thin-walled profiles and their uses.
Competence in the construction process
Students are familiar with common steel frame structures, structural members and their joint and support mechanisms. Students understand the principles of bracing steel frames, their behaviour and the importance of temporary support and stability during construction.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to manage and organize a safe implementation of work with steel structures. The student knows the different steel profiles and their targets of use and is able to make quantity lists based on technical drawings.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to dimension a simple beam and a support in the case of flexural buckling. The student is able to recognize the key components of steel systems and the principles of the bracing of a steel frame.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student masters well and is able to apply what they have learned. They can also analyze the connections between different things. The student can make diversified analyses and draw conclusions based on what they have learned.
